Brooke
Sleeping through three classes isn't a brilliant achievement but I was proud nonetheless. They weren't the most interesting of subjects: Math, Chemistry and English Literature (I really need to learn what that means sometime). They just happened to be three classes I didn't share with my talk-a-lot friend, Josie. When I say talk a lot, I mean a lot.
That's why it all started, because she just can't shut her pie hole. I do love her, honestly. But when it's your time of the month and you've just received some awful test results, you can't help but getting pretty annoyed at her. It was lunch when I snapped, finally. I shouldn't have, but I did.
"-and I was like 'excuse me, but, who do you think you are, Miss?'" The table erupted in laughter at one of Josie's stories. I wasn't even listening, just picking at my sandwich without actually eating it. I wasn't hungry, I had a stomach ache and according to the packet I'd already taken too many tablets. Around the table were a good mixture of people, well not really good mixture but a mixture.
It ranged from the jocks who always seemed to have some bimbo or other sat on their lap, to the cheerleaders who seemed to be the ones always sitting on someones lap. Like I said, not exactly a good range but a range nonetheless. I wasn't a cheerleader despite them asking me a couple hundred times. Just because I look like one doesn't mean I can jump here and flip there. No thanks.
I was more of an athletic girl. I do a lot of running, whether it be long distance, cross country or sprints, I'll do it. Initially, I began running because it kept me in shape because I always used to have a low self esteem. Now I do it because I enjoy it and it helps me relax.
Josie is more of a science nerd. Although she could send someone round the bend with her non-stop chatter, she is genuinely clever. Science is the only subject that she actually shuts up and does work in, nothing else really matters to her. For Josie, something has to grab her attention for it to matter to her.
The only reason she was popular was because she could make a joke out of anything and get anyone laughing. If she was challenged to make Simon Cowell laugh I'm sure she'd succeed.
"So, Brooke." Josie chimed, dragging me out of my chain of thoughts. All heads snapped my way. Woah, intimidating much.
"Mmhmm." I mumbled while trying to swallow the huge chunk of sandwich that was in my mouth. I hate it when that happens.
"You still haven't got a boyfriend and it's almost the end of this quarter." Josie said staring me in the eyes. "I mean, I know you have standards and in the end it's totally your choice who you end up with but, don't you think that if you don't put yourself out there you'll never find 'The One' as people say. I don't know about you, Brooke, but I believe in destiny and fate and true love and all that hippy-dippy nonsense. I think that your person is out there waiting for you and if neither of you put yourselves out there you're never going to find each other."
"That's rich coming from a girl without a partner." I snort and the listeners begin to snicker.
"You sound like a retarded donkey." Josie wrinkled her button nose at me, ignoring the others. "Anyway, I know I'm not in a relationship but at least I'm trying, Brooke. I've had a boyfriend this quarter, sadly he was gay... But you know, at least I know that although I'm making a fool of myself I'm still closer to finding love than those who sit back and wait for love to find them. People are always talking about soul mates but I think that if you don't grasp the opportunity while you can then you might miss your chance. They might get run over by a bus and you'll never know because you weren't out there. Look at it this way-"
