It was pitch black in the abandoned mall. We had heard that there was someone- or something- living inside. It was a conspiracy dating back to the 50's. The legend goes, there were three kids who went in here as a Halloween dare. Only one came out- and she was never the same again. Since then, no one has dared step onto the land.
Now I had to do it. Part of it was curiosity, wanting to see whether the story was true or not part of it was-
My thoughts were cut off by the ear splitting shriek of my friend Josh. He kinda sounded like a five year old girl, running away from the boy who has 'cooties'.
"Josh!" His girlfriend, Becky screamed. "Josh where are you?"
No response. This was messed up.
"Becky I think we should go," I said, grabbing her arm.
"Rachel," my best friend Alex tapped my shoulder and pointed in the direction we came from. There was a wall.
"That's not possible," I said.
"Oh but it is," said a bodiless voice that came from somewhere... right next to me.
"What do you want?" Alex asked moving closer to me and grabbing onto my arm. In normal circumstances I would've been a little weirded out but right now I was just glad she was safe. She was NOT going to get hurt.
"I want you," said the voice. I decided I'd call him Jim. Jim was really starting to freak me out.
"Okay first, that sounds wrong. Second, I don't really enjoy being 'wanted' by a bodiless figure," Becky said. Well no duh.
"Silence!" Jim said. Just then, Becky disappeared without a sound. It was like she had fallen through the foundation of the mall - as that was pretty much all that was left.
"Come, children. Follow me," Jim said.
"Umm, not to be rude but how exactly do we do that?" Alex asked, her grip on my arm getting a little stronger as her scared voice got a little weaker. "We can't exactly see you."
"Oh, right," Jim said. A faint light appeared and I could've sworn I heard someone mutter something about idiotic mortals.
"Thank you?" Alex said. I elbowed her in the ribs.
So we followed the light. It could've been hours or minutes. I kinda lost track. But with impending doom, you don't exactly think about that kind of thing.
Finally, we reached something like a cave. It was dark and creepy, and i could tell Alex felt the same way because her body stiffened and I could almost hear our heartbeats racing, practically in sync.
"Rachel," she whispered in my ear.
"I know. Just hush," I said.
"No. Look," she whispered, more urgently this time, into my ear. I looked to where she was looking at.
Bodies.
"But, they're all... dead," I said, and only after I said it did I realize how stupidly obvious it sounded.
"Exactly," Jim said in a menacing voice. If he had a body, I could imagine him having one of those evil smirks on his face.
Then, in the blink of an eye, it all went black.
