It has been about four years since Levi left to go on his expedition to another world. I can barely remember his face. I never thought I could love someone, but Levi made me smile and that was good enough for me. I just wish I could show him that he was wrong and I'm not evil. He has missed so much, I actually miss him.
The deep fog made it hard to see anything. If I didn't know this trail so well I would be easily lost, the damp grass making it hard to not move. As the fog started to clear, the deer started to gather in meadow. I had to push down the urge to stalk, kill, and eat the herd. I slowly nocked an arrow and pulled back the bow. I steadied my breath and looked down the arrow shaft. The feeling of the wood in my hands bringing a certain feeling of security. My arrow stayed true and hit its mark, a buck, sticking to the outside of the herd. The buck made a heavy thud as its body hit the grass. As I alined another shot, the remaining deer started bounding into the forest. I looked up into the deep forest, seeing a group of travelers about one hundred miles away. Even tough my eyesight is better than a mortals, I couldn't make out the face of the head rider. As the group approached I noticed a few facial features that made me glow with anger. I could feel the fire in my blood, even with the chilly weather I was sweating. I started sliding down the hill, my boots not gripping on any of thew wet grass. I grabbed a sapling to keep myself from sliding any farther and getting noticed by the group.
The smell of brunt grass and the plume of steam that surrounded me surprisingly didn't draw the groups attention, the last thing I need is to be noticed while in enemy woods. I waited for the group to trot past, taking cover in the brush under the trail. I let go of what was left of the sapling and slid down the rest of the hill, I stalked through the meadow to the fallen buck. I tied its back legs together and started pulling it up the hill, once on the traders trail, I unstrung my bow and put it in my game bag. I secured the deer to a makeshift cart and brought it to camp.
Kat looked at me in horror. "Avacyn, I know that you have to kill our food, but do you really have to leave the arrows in it too?!" I followed her gaze to the arrow planted in the deer's eye. "You shouldn't be so light hearted, that won't get you anything but killed in this world and you know it. I could care less if you get offended by my killing methods but at least I'm trying to keep you alive, you know how I feel about leaving you here alone all day without a defense." I love Kat but she is basically a parasite, she doesn't cook the food, or help hunt. She just kinda gets in my way a lot, I've saved her more times than I can count, she refuses to let me teach her how to defend herself. "Av, you know how I feel about fighting. Its not a princess's job to defend herself, but rather her protectors job. I don't have to worry about being killed because you will always save me, you said so yourself!" "Kat I said that so you would realize how dangerous it is out here, your not safe with me. I'm an elf, and I'm wanted in every kingdom but your fathers!" Kat is a princess, clearly and I had to take her into hiding while the kingdom is at war. I had to drop my general post to protect her. The one thing that ius keeping g us both safe is truly my magic and deadly instincts.
The stars were shinning bright when I heard the scream of a girl, and I got up and saw smoking coming from the village. I grabbed my bow and quiver and my coat and started towards the village with haste. As I got closer to the small village and saw the group of riders from the meadow raising the houses to the ground. I pulled my bow from its protective tube and strung it. I quickly took out two of the group, and strung another arrow for a man cloaked in black, he was holding a child with silver hair that was screaming for its mother. I let the arrow fly and the little boy dropped and he ran for his mother who lay lifeless on the ground, blood staining her ashy dress. I knew this child, I've seen him in the village while buying supplies for me and Kat.
I looked around me, and all I could see was smoke, and all I could hear was the screaming of women and children as their loved ones were slaughtered in front of them. I felt rage, it came over me with such force that I couldn't even try and control the fire that raged through me. The flames consumed everything in their path, all I could focus on was the boy who clung to his dead mother. His mother was a humble lady, she didn't deserve to die. She had worked very hard to take care of that boy, the boy who had to watch his mother die. I looked up to see the damage that my fire had brought to see that the only survivor was the boy who looked at me with fear and wonder.
The longer I looked at the boy the longer I had to stare into my past. I heard foot steps and turned around to see Kat, she was huffing and her face was red. "Avacyn, what happened? I was sleeping and then I heard screaming and I noticed you were gone then a wall of flames came from the village! Are you okay?" Her worried tone making me feel bad for scaring her. Kat looked at the boy, and she looked at me with realization. "Avacyn... Is that him. He looks just like you and Levi," Kat study the boy's face as he started crying. I looked at Kat with the intent to say something but my mouth just hung open and I had nothing to say. Kat came up to me and pulled me close, "Avacyn, he has to be your son." She bent down in front of the child and asked how old he was. "F-f-four," The child stuttered out through the tears.
The next morning Kat and I packed up our camp and I covered our tracks from the camp to the traders trail. We took the kid and went back to the ash of the village to find some horses. At the child's farm we found two horses. Kat took the bay colored mare and rode with the boy, while I took the black and gray stallion by myself. I set the pace at a light trot. We left the village far behind within the hour.
We stopped for lunch at noon, luckily we still had dried beast and some bread left. I gave my half of the bread to the boy and the other half to Kat. We ate our lunch in silence and Kat kept the boy close while I went to find some water. As I was sitting at a small stream it dawned on me that the child really could be the one I left with Iris four years ago after Levi left. My mind wondered to Levi and I want to know how he is. I have so much I want to tell him. I want to show him my marks. I want to tell him I loved him. Soon after we started back on the trail, the sky turned a dark gray and rain started to fall. Kat and the boy clung to each other and I could tell both were shivering. I brought my horse to a slower pace and brought forth a small flame to keep them warm. The rain fall increased and we were forced to stop, Kat and the boy stayed with the horses on the path. The rain would have made it difficult to see for a human, but my vision was virtually unaffected. I led Kat and the kid to a small ledge that I found that hangs off just enough for two people. I help Kat and the kid down and into the small alcove. The rain struck my face like falling needles, the rest of my body protected by a coat. I ventured further into the brush, looking for a spot to practice my new element. My little spot was hard to find, it took me nearly an hour to find. It was a small cove, surrounded by thick bushes and tall trees. I slipped my coat off and set it on the ground by my gloves. I let the rain fall over me, its cool feeling helped clear my mind of the village. I focused on the burning village, and a familiar feeling of rage washed over me. I could hear the hiss of the rain hit my skin and turned to steam. Holding on to that feeling of rage, I lifted my palm and slowly opened it. I felt the heat of the flame on my face before I opened my eyes and saw. I let the fire grow and fall out of my palm, it trickled to the ground. My magic feeding it, keeping it alive, making it grow. Within seconds I was surrounded by dancing flames, the heat warming my body. I made the flames take forms of dancing people, women in elaborate ball gowns and men in fancy suits. I watched my figures dance, and started humming a tune of a lost song. My people had many beautiful songs, the elves were known for our beautiful voices and our hypnotizing music. People used to say that my kind would sing to plants to help them grow. I sat on the now dry ground, and watched the flames dance around me. I let my thoughts wonder back to my lost lover, and a certain chill came over me. I was pulled from my thoughts as something very cold touch my shoulder. I looked up to see tiny snow flakes falling in the air, my fire dancers had turned to ice figures. I tried to let the fire back out to keep myself warm, but all I got were flurries. My head dropped and I continued to let Levi fill my mind. "Who are you?," a man with silver eyes and onyx hair questioned me. "I don't answer assholes like you, if you want to know something you can get off your ass and find the fuck out." every word spoken burned my throat. The lack of lubrication made it hard to speak, my captors not sparing any water or food. I barely had time to flinch before I felt a stinging sensation against my right cheek. I looked up at the short man, he stood about five foot three inches. His ears weren't pointed like mine, come to think of it no one around here has ears like me. These people are not elves! My heart started racing, and I was gripped by fear. I was insanely scared, there was no way these humans were going to let me live. I've only spent eight painstakingly long years in this world, and I'm not going to be killed by some humans. A feeling of rage sprung forth and the flames lighting the dim room flowed from the wall scones and consumed the chains holding my wrists captive. The metal shackles turned a bright cherry red before beads of scorching metal dropped to the floor. I pulled my wrists to my front, rubbing the tender skin. I am not dying without a fight. I could feel the fire pulsing inside me, ready to fight.
