Chapter One
I stayed on my side of the hallway.
Vampires and humans had separate sides at Jackson High and heck most schools all over the country. A bold yellow line in the middle of the gray tiles keeping us separated. Cameras from the ceiling made sure that everything remained as it was supposed to.
You could imagine the awkwardness of the atmosphere, no one spoke above a whisper, and never - I do mean never- looked at the vampires. Everyone's afraid that they would be enslaved by their "magical gazes". Nothing but another pointless rumor the government has brainwashed into us to make sure we kept our distances.
I didn't mind the vampires. They were just like humans... just dead, soulless, emotionless humans. I didn't want to discriminate against them, not all could help what they were. The fact that the government forces us to be so separate is immoral if you ask me. The vampires made the first move to come out and try to be civil amongst us and what do we do? Scrutinize and quarantine them as if we could catch their vampirism through touch.
I shook my head at the egotistical ways of our government. It was useless; no one would defend a vampire, not a human anyway.
I found my way to my locker, Kylie and Devin were whispering about something arbitrary most likely. "They said his name was Mark, or Marvin, something with an M" Whispered Kylie. Kylie had to be the go to girl to any form of gossip. If someone had been all the way across campus and kissed a vampire she'd be the first person to know. How? Only God could know.
"I heard he's cute, not that anyone has looked him in the eyes. They're all too chicken." Devin scrutinized, as if she wasn't herself.
"Who are you all talking about?" I asked them softly and they both turned to look at me. "You haven't heard? There's a new vampire." Kylie informed me while I shut my locker and turned to walk towards the exit.
"When isn't there a new vampire?" I questioned and Devin smirked.
"None like this one, they say he's rogue. A rule breaker, who knows? He might spice things up around here" Devin had hope in her eyes as she spoke. I wouldn't disagree, things were dead around here. Undead is more like it.
"I don't see why you're smiling, this will only make things worst. If he is indeed a "rule breaker" he will make it even more difficult for his kind. More rules even more separation, the School Board will do whatever is necessary to make sure we are "safe" I shook my head at the wording. What would a yellow line do to a blood thirsty vampire? Nothing but be stepped across.
As we exited the building heading to the West Side of the campus where the humans' classes were taught, I managed to sneak a peek in the opposite direction. There, leaning against the stone wall, was a walking talking masterpiece.
His messy blonde hair almost blended with his ash white skin. He was dressed in all black except for the blue tie tucked into his sweater vest. He had pale arms that clashed with the dark material. In his fingers he held a cigarette, puffs of smoke fleeing from his pink lips. His gaze caught mine and my lungs felt as if they were going to explode. He had dark eyes, not being able to tell what color I settled with dark.
A smile formed on his lips causing me to stumble over my own two feet.
I steadied myself and faced forward. Devin and Kylie were farther ahead of me, I looked back once more a pout forming upon my lips. He was no longer there. With that I hurried to catch up with my friends.
Did it make me a nerd because I loved Calculus? As the teacher began to start writing notes on the board I flipped through the next few chapters. Senior year, most were taking Pre-Cal, but not me. I had AP everything except for one class, Vampire History. There was no AP class for that, I don't think the human teachers would want to teach it anyway.
