The line for the yo-yo surprisingly wasn't that long, and I ended up going without Ally. Up at the very top I tried to find her at the food stand, but it was too dark, even with all the flashing lights.
I was debating on calling her, after the ride was over, but I never got the chance. As the ride was starting to descend, all of the sudden everything went black. And I mean all the colorful lights, the rides, everything came to a sudden stop in the darkness. I hear screaming, then a rush of people heading for the exits, children crying for their mothers.
I am freaking out. Why did the power have to go out now, when I'm all alone on a high, unsteady carnival ride?! I look around and see I am not the only one freaking out. One chick is frantically trying in vain to undo the seatbelt and jump out.
"Someone call the fire department or something! Get us down!" I yell. I'm trying to keep my cool, but slowly my façade of calmness is failing. Where is Ally??
In a stroke of brilliance I remember my phone in my pocket. I whip it out and call Ally. Ring...ring...ring...ring...
To my immense relief, she picks up! "Rose oh my gosh where are you?!" She is hysterical.
"Ally I'm freaking out! I'm stuck on the yo-yo!" I reply.
"I'm still by the food stands I didn't want to move without you!" She says.
"Hold on I'm looking for you." I say craning my neck looking for her familiar blonde head or her green jacket. Instead, what I do see sends chills down my back. The huge mob at the exits are being held up by clowns.
My nightmares are confirmed. Something really was messed up about those clowns, and it wasn't just their makeup.
"Oh my gosh Ally! T-t-there are clowns! Clowns blocking the exits! Stay away, stay right where you are!" I practically scream at her.
"What! No!" She is really hysterical now. "Rose! I'm being swept away towards the exits! Help me!"
Now there's a different voice on the line. Someone's ragged breathing.
Then that someone starts singing, their voice barely a whisper. I listen in horror. "Ring around the Rosie, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, we all fall down."
My chair drops.
