I woke up the next morning feeling horrible. The last week had been the worst of my life. My best friend, who I considered my sister, had been bragging about her first kiss. After hours of listening to how amazing her relationship with her boyfriend was going, I told I had to go. She didn’t like that, and thought I was just jealous of her life. She got her friend to start bullying me, calling me names that a person should never be called.
Thinking back on what had happened, tears started running down my cheeks. I hated feeling sorry for myself, but what else could I do? I heard my door handle rattle, and quickly wiped away my tears. I waited for Maria to walk in, asking me how I was. But the person who walked in wasn’t Maria, it was Toby. I smiled as he walked over to my bed and crawled in with me. “When’s mommy gonna be home?” he asked me as he lay down.
“In a week, it’ll go by fast, don’t worry.” Our mom is a lawyer. She was working on a case in Oregon. Our dad is a doctor. He works long nights so we barely see him. That’s why Maria’s here; our parents work all the time.
I picked Toby up and walked downstairs to the living room. I turned on some kid show for him and set him on the couch. I walked outside to get the mail from yesterday. There was a letter from a legal firm in Oregon. I figured it was from my mom, so I opened it. Inside, was a check for a large amount of money. There was a note with it, asking to cash it into the savings account. I rolled my eyes and went inside to get ready.
Within the hour, I was walking to the bank with nearly eight thousand dollars in my pocket. I got to the bank, and had to stand in a short line. About five minutes after I walked in a boy about my age and his mother came in and stood behind me in the line. I turned around to smile at him. I had sunglasses on, so he couldn’t see the dark circles under my eyes from the hard day yesterday. He quickly smiled and looked down. Right after I turned around, it was my turn to go up to the receptionist. I handed her the check and asked her to put it into savings. She looked at the check and her eyes got really wide. She quickly got a hold of herself and told me shed be right back. I smiled and said thank you and waited for a good five minutes before she returned. She handed me my receipt and I left looking at the boy that stood in line behind me. He stared at me as I walked out. I could have sworn I’d seen him before, but I was probably just hallucinating.
As I walked out of the building, a girl stopped me, asking me if I had a minute. I walked over to where a couple men with suits on were standing. I got kind of freaked out but I kept walking with her.
“Hello. My name is jack. I’m an executive producer for this modeling agency.” He reached his hand out and handed me a card. I grabbed it and looked down to read it. My eyes got real wide.
“This is the biggest modeling agency in California!”
“That is correct. I’ve been out scouting for a week, and you’re the best girl I’ve seen.
“Um, thanks. I think.” My heart started beating really fast. If this scout is about to say what I hope he is, I’m going to have a heart attack.
“How would you like to be a model for us?” he smiled when he saw my reaction.
I couldn’t find words, so I just nodded my head.
“Great. Come to the studio at 11:30 tomorrow to get started.” He handed me the address and the group of people walked away.
