It's cold on the rooftop of my apartment complex , but it's also calm so i don't mind. Not to mention the breathtaking view i never get sick of. Up there, that's where my mind becomes alive. You see i'm a writer, i'm always thinking. In chaos, loud noises, or placid environments, my mind runs rampant with scenarios. Those scenarios turn into books. That's how I make a living. I write my books on the rooftop late at night, the best place and time to find my inspiration. Then i usually fall asleep by 3am, thankfully my apartment is on the top floor. It's small but it's cozy. I like my little life with my little apartment but part of me always wants someone to share it with. I'm already 20 and i haven't made any progress towards my future yet. I need something more, i need my other half.
"It's been a lonely two years. I graduated and went right to Chicago, with no friends, no family, not even college to occupy me. It's starting to get a bit hard to afford myself. My books are only online and fewer people are reading them. I need a second job, a close job." I thought a moment to myself. I remember seeing a hiring sign in Beau's Coffee, a little café a block or two from here. "I'll check it out tomorrow." I thought again to myself. I finished the rest of my Chamomile tea and fell asleep thinking about how I could figure it all out.
I woke up at about 10am and I took a hot shower. Another place I like to think, all of my ideas seem to crawl out from where they were hiding. When I got out I blow dried my hair, put on moisturizer, brushed my teeth and went to my room. I picked out my clothes; A grey sweater, black coat, black jeans, white hat, burgundy scarf, and black booties. I've learned to wear layers since i've moved here. Then I put on a little mascara and lip balm. I grabbed my keys, my purse, and my phone and head out the door. I got onto the elevator and following after me was a guy i'd never seen before. He was pretty attractive as well, black hair and green/grey eyes, glasses, nice style too. Me of course being the awkward one said "Hey! I haven't seen you before, are you new to the complex?". He wouldn't look at me. "Yeah, I actually just moved here from Cleveland." he said. I smiled and stuck out my hand, "I'm Mel Faraway, tipitty top floor."He looked at my hand and turned his head back"Wesley Hubbard, also top floor." he said in a monotone voice. " Oh cool" i said, "We're the only two up there, rest of the rooms are dead people's." and i laughed. Damn it... i swear i'm not a psychopath, why can't i talk like a normal person. "Cool." he said uninterestedly. The elevator stopped at the bottom floor. "Nice to meet you Wesley!" I said still holding that smile. "Mhm" he said quietly as he stepped out of the elevator. I thought to myself. Damn, why so salty.
I stepped out of the elevator and saw my best friend, Ms. Swanson the old lady who walks her cats and makes them sweaters. "Oh hello Mel dear! How are your books coming sweetheart?" she said with her caring voice, bless her soul. "They're coming great Ms.Swanson! Thanks for asking! How is Wells doing?" Wells is her cat. Her smile faded a little . " He's not doing great dear, he has fell ill." she said still trying to smile. "Oh Ms.Swanson, I am SO sorry to hear that!If you need anything make sure you call me and i'll come down to help" i said heart broken for her. All she's got are her two cats and well, me. "Mel you are the sweetest, most beautiful girl! Thank you so much!" she said. "Hope you feel better!" i said walking out of the doors.
I unlocked my car, white Jeep Grand Cherokee 2000, my favorite place to sit and be lazy ever. I connected my phone to the aux and put on my Spotify playlist. I pulled out of my parking spot and drove down the street to Beau's Coffee. I was just jamming to my favorite song by The Beatles and the lady in the car next to me was judging the hell out of me so i decided to stop. Embarrassingly. But then resumed when I passed her. I arrived at Beau's coffee and there was one parking spot left so I sped into it. I pulled over the curb on accident and almost hit a small kiddo so I backed up and straightened myself out. I walked into the shop and my nose started to thaw, which is the best feeling ever by the way. "Can I get a Mocha Latte with extra cream please?" i said. "Yes ma'am, that'll be $3.21." I swiped my card. "Hey also, I saw that you guys were hiring, do you have an application?" i said a little hesitantly. "Yes we do. My name is Karmen, if you need anything just ask." she said. "I'm Mel, Thank you so much!" i said and i took the application and sat down in the back corner. As i filled out the application i saw the spot for "spouses name". "I wish" i thought to myself as I shamefully wrote down NA. When I completed the , thankfully, simple application I gave it back to Karmen. "We are able to interview you right now if you want." she said. "Uhhh, yea sure. Why not" i replied. She brought me to the manager and we sat down. He was a bigger guy, brown hair, brown eyes. "So miss..." he looked down at the paper "Faraway, you want to apply for the job." "Yes sir, I do" i replied. "Okay, Let me ask you a few questions." he said and looked over my application. "Have you had any job experiences?" he asked. "Not really, I'm a writer." i said. "That's alright, we usually have first timers here." he said acceptingly. "Single?" he asked. In my head I cursed the world for bringing that to my attention once again. "Yes" i said and laughed, holding back the urge to run to the bathroom and hang myself with my scarf. "Any hobbies?" he asked. "Uhhh, Writing of course, Singing, Photography, Art." i answered. "And last question, how many hours are you usually available?" he asked. "Pretty much anytime." i said sounding like i have no life whatsoever. He smiled and said "You're hired." confused i said "Wait what? That easy?" As he walked away he said "This isn't rocket science, it's mixing up drinks. I've got your number you start Monday and i'll text you your hours." . "Oh, ummm... Okay! Thanks!" I said shocked. That was easy. I walked out of the shop, the little bell ringing. "See you Monday Mel!!" Karmen shouted as I walked out. I smiled and gave her a thumbs up. I opened my car door and hoped in with a quirky kind of jitter, smiling. I started my car and hooked my phone up to the bluetooth. I put on Here Comes The Sun by the Beatles. I shifted my car into reverse and started backing out. Suddenly I felt a strong impact on the back right of my car. I jerked to the left and my airbag went off. I couldn't quite see anything, my mind stuttered and slowed down. And then, black.
