Kali's POV
Growing up life hasn't been easy for me, I got sick when I was 3 with meningitis which results to me being deaf. I was in and out of the hospital from time to time, I got my first cochlear implant when I was 4 years young I think that was the most happiest I've ever been. What is a cochlear implant you ask? well it is like an hearing aid it is a device used to help me hear but unlike an hearing aid you have to go through surgery to insert a magnet under the skin above your ear. Ok enough about that let me introduce myself. My name is Kali Imani Azikiwe I am 17 years old and I now live in London, England. Welcome to my life.
It's Monday morning the day I've been dreading, today I start my first day at school in London. I turned over in my bed looking at the digital clock on my night stand, 6:45AM it read. Sighing I sat up in my bed looking around my dark room, my hands searching my bed for my phone once I found it I opened the instagram app and started scrolling through my feed checking peoples pages returning likes and comments. I replied to some of my friends' texts from back in Canada ugh I miss them already I don't know why we had to move all the way to the other side of the world. At the corner of my eye I saw my door being opened in walked my mother turning on the light.
"Time to get up and get going Kali" my mother said walking out my room and closing the door. Don't get me wrong I love my mother but she can be annoying at times, obeying her I got out of my bed grabbing my towel on my way out the door. I headed down the hall into the bathroom, stripping out of my clothes I stepped into the shower letting the hot water run down my back I did my business and went back to my room getting dressed for school. Running back up the stairs almost forgetting my cochlear I put it on before proceeding downstairs.
"Good morning Mom" I said as I entered the kitchen picking up my 8 months old baby sister Samia and kissing my 4 year old brother Dre on the cheek.
Reading my mom's lips she said "Morning Kal, sleep well?" I replied "yea it was alright" I walked over to the dining room sitting at the table still holding Samia. My step dad came down the stairs dressed for work he went over to my mom and gave her a kiss on the cheek I rolled my eyes at their affection.
"Hey kiddo" my step dad Mark said coming over to me it was a little hard reading his lips due to his moustache covering his lips but I still managed to make out what he said.
"You ready for your first day of senior year?" He asked looking at me smiling slightly.
"not really" I said. "I'm starting a new school in a new country I don't even know anyone here it will be awkward" I added.
