This was it! The most exciting day of the whole year! The day of treats, the day of pumpkins and the day of scary stories. To him this was even better than his birthday. He would make some jack-o'-lanterns and together with his friends he will go door to door for candy. He was doing this every year.
But this year he wanted to do something different. A couple of streets away there was a house. But not a normal house. There was said there’s living a witch. Parents always warned them to walk along and not to knock on the door. This couldn’t be true of course, all those fairy tales aren’t real. He would convince his friends to go along with him. They would prove their parents they weren’t scared of anything. They would show this ‘’witch’’ who they are and then they would be the heroes of the school. Or even better, the whole city!
‘’Josh!! JOOOOSH!!’’ , His mother called. ‘’Come over here! Or don’t you want to see your ghost costume anymore?’’ ‘’Coming!’’, he shouted back. He had thought about this for months. First he wanted to go as Superman. But that was childish. He was already eleven. Halloween was fun, but you must not become too keen. He went downstairs, still thinking about not being childish. ‘’There you are’, his mother said, ’Look at this. Do you still like it? Or did you change your mind again?’ Josh looked at it. He was glad his mother didn’t mess up again. Last year he asked his mother to make a zombie costume. She was a tailor. But she didn’t like bloody things. So, she changed his idea of a zombie into a firefighter. He had been so upset! He told all his friends he would get the price of the best Halloween costume, and now he was forced to be a firefighter! Luckily this costume looked great! ‘’Wow! Thanks, mom! I like it a lot!’, he smiled, ‘Can I already try it on?’’ his mother looked worried. ‘’I don’t think that’s a good idea. It’s fall and very windy. It might break when you go outside. It’s not as firm as it looks.’’ ‘’Okay then. Can I go to Nick?’’ his mother nodded.
Nick’s house was nice decorated. And he was still busy with it. He can frighten him… ‘’WHAAAA!’’ ‘’NOOO HEEELP!!!!’’ Nick was shocked. ‘’You almost scared me to death! Don’t do it again, will you?’’ They slowly walked inside. ‘’Look there’s my costume. Do you like it?’’ ‘’Oh yeah it’s great, almost as great as mine!’’ Josh joked. ‘’Shall we go to Luke and Simon?’’
After everyone got his costume and its bucket for the candy, they all went outside. Twilight was already coming. Soon they would ring bells, knock on doors and scream: TRICK OR TREAT! ‘’Where shall we go first?’, Luke asked. ’Of course we first go to the family McKennan. They always have such delicious candy!’’ Nick smiled. ‘’This will be the best evening of my life! Finally, everything’s as we want. Nice costumes, good buckets, a working plan…’’ They slowly walked further. ‘’Yeah about the plan, I think we should change it. My idea was to go to the witch hous- ‘’ ‘’WHAT? Are you serious? I’m not going to that house, whatever you might say.’’ Simon looked shocked. ‘’Whatever. Who’s going with me? Or are you as frightened as him too?’’ He glanced around. ‘’Eeh, I don’t eeeh, I don’t think that’s a good idea.’’ Luke shook his head. ‘’So everyone believes fairy tales and nobody dares to come with me? Okay, then I will go alone and I’ll show you there’s nothing to be afraid of.’’ Josh walked away, aware of the worried glances. He was furious. Did they believe in those stupid stories? They were probably hundred years old and if there even was a witch she might just have been an ugly woman. He was going to ring the bell and just ask for candy. What was hard about that?
‘’HEY! WAIT FOR US!’’ He looked behind. ‘’What? Are you going to stop me from going there?’’ His panting friends looked anxious. ‘’No why? We…. We want to help you. Where you go, we go, that’s the agreement of our friendship.’’ They all looked concerned, but still anxious. ‘’Okay thanks. We’ll continue our way to the first houses and at, let’s say, 10 o’clock we’ll go to the house.’’ He shot a thankful gaze at them.
