June 4

I woke up and slowly took my shower. I tried to inhale but my nose was all stuffy from crying. Today was going to be a long day; I felt awful. I packed all my clothes up and went down to the lobby to sign out.

"I hope you enjoyed your stay" the woman smiled.

I saw Adam approaching me out the corner of my eye, and I glanced away, pretending he wasn't there. I quickly returned the key and waved down a taxi to get home.

Next Day

June 5

The weather outside matched my mood. Rainy and dull. I pushed myself to get out of bed once again. I stood in the shower, washing up and thinking of the events from yesterday. I dried off and went to watch the news for the weather. The institute's name was under the list of closed schools, due to severe thunderstorms in the area. I went and looked out the window and the car lights and rushing New Yorkers were still going along with their normal schedules despite the warnings for severe weather. I changed into a oversize camouflage t-shirt with gray leggings. I turned on the coffee maker and made a nice cup of coffee.

I grabbed a fleece throw-over and sat on the couch to watch a movie. Just as I got comfortable I heard a knock on the door. "Hold on!" I paused the movie and got up. I stood on my tiptoes and looked through the peephole. Adam was standing there.

"What do you want?" "Aaliyah I just want to talk." "There's nothing to talk about." "I know you had a lot of bad relationships in your life, but I'm not like those other guys." "That's what they always say Adam. I'm not gonna listen to that bullshit." "I'm not them, Aaliyah..."

I leaned back against the door not saying a word.

"And I'll never be like them. But if you're not ready I'm not going to force you. I don't want you to feel like your being pressured. Now, can you please open the door everyone that passes is looking at me like I'm crazy." "Fine." I opened the door and he smiled and walked in. "What have you been doing?" "Trying to enjoy Hairspray, with some coffee. You want some?" "Yeah, if you don't mind." I grabbed another mug and saucer from the cabinet.

"Is this you when you were younger?" I looked over and he was looking at a picture on the refrigerator. I walked over. "Mhm, that's me, my mom, dad, and my older brothers Jerod and Michael when we were younger. My dad found it in the attic a couple weeks ago, and sent it here the other week." "You must miss them" he added.

"Yeah, but we talk every week. And they're planning on visiting soon." "I wish I could get away from my family sometimes" I sat the creamer and sugar on the counter. "You all seem happy though, why would you want to leave?" "Family problems. And I just want to see the world, out of this cold city." I leaned up against the counter. "Millions of people dream of this city and you want to leave?" "I grew up here. All my life I lived in New York City. You get tired of this place after a while."
