Today, I'm 16. Nothing in my way to getting my dream car and hitting up the mall with my BFFS, Krista and Mackenzie. The date is Saturday, May 17th. It's sunny outside with a light breeze. I bounce down the stairs to greet my step mom and my dad.

"Morning!" I say excitedly. I think they could notice how hyper I was about getting a car because they shared a worried glance, which I pretended to ignore.

"Hey honey, happy birthday!" Said my dad as he came over towards me to get more coffee. I just smiled, popped my toast out of the toaster and sat down at the table to eat.

"Happy Birthday Lexipedia!" my step mom said as she set a cute box out in front of me.

Oh my god, this must be new keys to a car!! I ripped open the package quickly and opened the box. My heart sunk.

"Don't you love it!?" my stepmom asked. My dad sat down and joined us.

I glanced down at the cheap $5 ring in the box. I bet it's made of plastic from China or Japan or some other foreign country.

"Um, I don't get it. What is it?" I ask confused.

"It's a promise ring!" My dad said. I gave him a confused look. He let out a deep breath.

"It's our promise to you that we'll get you a car next year." He told me.

I jumped up. "What do you mean, next year?!" I cried. My parents glanced a each other again.

"We're really sorry..." my stepmom started. But I cut her off.

"No your not, dads just cheap. You know what dad? I bet mom would've bought me a car for my 16th birthday." I said. My stepmom looked hurt, not only that I brought up my mom, but that I was basically saying she would've been a better parent.

I don't know much about my mother. I know my parents divorced when I was two. My dad had told me she was suicidal and basically a crazy nut because of her demanding job as a police officer. She'd somehow won custody over me in court. But, a week later, she left me at the doorstep of a group foster home. When my dad came to visit me a few weeks later, my mom had told him what she did with me. He said she was high when he told him.

He looked all over for me, since she wouldn't tell him which group home I was left at. It took him a few days, but he found me and took me home. That was the last time he ever saw my mother, though. A week later, her picture had been on the news.

She shot herself that night. And nobody ever knew why. Some say she was murdered. Others say it was suicide. It was ruled suicide by the police when they found a gun wound and a suicide note, but I was never sure which it was when my dad told me all of this. So, I guess you could say my birth mother is a sore subject.

"Lexie! How DARE you say that, especially in front of your mother!" My dad screamed, protecting my step mom. Who, by the way, her name is Ella.

"You won't let me say it. But why? Because you know it's true?!" I asked. My dad looked stunned, but I didn't care.

"Go to your room! You won't be getting a car NEXT year, or the year AFTER. You'll get one once you move out and BUY ONE YOURSELF! You won't be getting the REST of your presents either!" He shouted at the top of his lungs. Ella looked terrified. We hardly ever fought about anything. At least not in front of her.

"You can't tell me what to do! I'm going to the mall with Kenzie and Krista!" With that, I slammed the door, stormed down the driveway, and walked to Krista's house. She called Kenzie and I told them everything.

"What? How could they do that to you?" Kenzie asked. Easy for her to say, she had a covetable.

"Come on, lets take you to the mall for a birthday cake, our treat!" Krista said.

15 minutes later we were at the mall in the food court. A piece of hot pink cake and two candles, the numbers 1 and 6, sat in front of me. They sand happy birthday to me and told me to wake a wish.

I wish my Dad would die of guilt for doing this to me. Literally.

With that, I blew out the candles.
"Hope you get what you wished for." They both said to me.

I do too.

We shared the cake and shopped for another hour or so before I told them I should get home before my Dad comes and hunts me down.

I got home a half hour later to my step mom on the couch in a blanket. Her eyes looked red and puffy.

"Hey, are you okay...?" I set down my purse and walked slowly over to her.

"Um, Lexie, honey? I need to tell you something." She said, sitting up and wiping her eyes.

"What is it?" I asked as I sat down next to her.

"It's... it's your dad honey." She went quiet. "He was in an accident. He's in the hospital in critical condition. Almost gone."

"What!? Oh my god what happened?!" I asked her scared. I got a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach.

"Well, he was going to go find you at the mall. He was worried, since you've never really been that mad at him before. Plus, you weren't answering your phone. I guess on the way there, a truck came out of nowhere. Demolished your dad's car..." she trailed off. "The doctors said if we wanted to say goodbye, he may only live for 20 more minutes or so. But, he's in a coma." She finished. I was stunned. Tears welled in my eyes.

"Okay." I whispered. "Let's go say goodbye."
