Adalynn woke up feeling like there were weights on her body. Her eyelids felt heavy and her back hurt. The covers were all balled up on the other side of the bed, like she had thrown them off. She felt cold. She answered the phone that had woken her up, knowing that it was her mom. "Yeah?" Her voice was gravelly. She cleared her throat.
"Adalynn! Oh thank God you answered." She jumped at hearing his voice. She looked at the clock, showing six, meaning it was twelve in England. She couldn't tell whether it was morning or night. Adalynn realized she hadn't said anything in response, and Harry was waiting for her to speak.
She pulled the phone away from her ear, not wanting him to hear her breathing heavily. She went to hang up when he spoke again. "Adalynn please don't hang up." His voice was different. He always seemed to know what he was saying. Like he talked so slow that he had time to go over everything that was coming out of his mouth. But not right then. His voice cracked at the Adalynn, and he sounded desperate. She had never heard so much raw emotion in his voice.
"What do you want, Harry." She sounded dead. She felt dead.
"I just want a chance to explain. Please. Its not... Its not as weird as it seems."
Adalynn took a deep breath. He wasn't speaking. Why didn't he start explaining? "You have me on the phone, Harry. Go ahead, before I change my mind." She sounded cold, because that's how she wanted to sound. She was tired. Tired of everyone in the town, tired of being confused, tired of Harry too. Not to mention, she was sleepy, she was still jet-lagged.
"I can't. Adalynn I-"
"You can't? You honestly can't. Are you fucking serious, Harry? Do you know how much I've been through to get away from you? I crashed a plane! If you honestly think you can just call me up to chat after all that then you're just... You're just fucking wrong. If you don't have anything to explain then Harry it's-"
"Don't. Don't say that. Don't... Just don't. I need to speak with you face to face. That's all." "You're stalling. You don't have anything to say, do you? You just don't want to-"
"I don't want to lose you. You're right. But I'm not stalling. I need to talk to you."
"I'm in America, Harry!"
"So am I." Adalynn's breath caught.
"Well. Well I'm... I'm sure as hell not going to tell you where I am."
"Adalynn please open the door." Adalynn pulled the phone away from her ear and stared at it. He couldn't have been serious. How could he have found her? It was ridiculous.
Adalynn slowly lowered her phone onto the bed and stood up. The floor was cold under her bare feet, and she wasn't wearing any pants. She was still wearing Harry's Ramones shirt, she couldn't bare to take it off. It didn't occur to her that she should put on pants before she opened the door, so she didn't.
He was standing there leaning on the door. Harry still had the phone at his ear. He seemed too tall for the door, too tall for the town. He seemed too tall for anything.
When he noticed her, he slowly slid the phone into his pocket. He stood up straight and struggled to make eye contact. Instead, he looked her up and down. When he recognized his shirt, he had to fight to keep the smile off his face. Adalynn noticed.
Adalynn wasn't sure what to do. She pulled the shirt down a little, feeling self conscious. Adalynn didn't want to show weakness, and she was too shocked to actually do anything.
