I walked down the wet, cobblestone streets, water splashing up at me and turning my fur an ugly grayish brown color. It always hurt going down these streets, having to be reminded of my friend that would never walk down them with me again.

I used to have a best friend named Fang. He was a giant haxorus with golden armor and shiny silver skin. His eyes were a brilliant blue color, sparkling like the reflection of the moon on a body of water.

Before I had met him, I had been living on the streets. It was about a year and a half ago when I rounded the corner of a building and ran straight into him. He knew right away that I was homeless and he offered to show me the world. I accepted his offer even though I was sure it was some kind of trick. It wasn’t.

We traveled everywhere, exploring the world and taking part in competitions. Fang was always kind to me and treated me like family. We did everything together. Unfortunately my happy moments with him eventually came to an end.

Four months ago we were up in some mountains. We were trying to hurry and reach the base of the mountain before nightfall. The base was just starting to come into view when all of a sudden the ground began to shake. There was a huge explosion and dust rose up around us. When the dust began to clear, I could make out a huge shape looming over us. A steelix had just burst up out of the ground.

His eyes glowed an eerie red, and he whipped his head back and forth, searching the ground for someone or something. He spotted us and roared with anger. I could already tell what this was all about: someone had pissed off this steelix and now he was looking for someone to take his anger out on. It happened all the time with a lot of pokemon.

Fang had turned to me then, worry spreading across his face. “Stanza, this one looks like a toughie. You better go take cover while I handle him.” “Sure thing,” I replied, already heading towards a cluster of rocks that was a short distance away. I took cover behind the rocks, and peeked out from behind them to watch Fang fight off the steelix.

The steelix blew out a powerful dragonbreath at Fang, which he countered with his own dragonbreath. Fang quickly launched a dragon pulse attack at the steelix’s head, which smashed into his skull and knocked him back with surprise. Fang then preceding in following his dragon pulse with his signature attack: dragon claw.

I watched as a beautiful blue light pulsed around his claws, then transformed into the shape of a dragon. Fang charged towards the steelix and slammed the attack into him with all his might. The steelix roared with pain and toppled to the ground. Fang checked to make sure that the steelix was too weak to get up, and then turned to me.

“Hey Stanza!” he called, “Are you alright?”

“Yep, I’m fine!” I called back, “That was a great fight Fang! You sure showed him who’s-” I froze midsentence, as I watched the steelix slowly rise up behind Fang. “Fang, watch out!” I screamed.

My warning was too late. Fang turned around just in time to see the steelix fling down a shower of huge boulders at him. Fang’s eyes widened and he turned as if he was going to run.

But he didn’t. He turned and looked at me and yelled something. I couldn’t hear what he said over my own frantic screams, but I could tell by the way that his mouth moved when forming the words that he was saying: “I’m sorry, but it’s going to be okay.”

Rivers of tears streamed down my face as I watched the boulders rain down on him and crush his body. “FANG!” I screamed over and over. It didn’t take long for me to shut my mouth though once I saw the steelix heading towards my hiding spot.

I did the only thing I could think of. I quickly dug a hole in the ground and buried myself in it. I waited silently, listening as the steelix stormed around, looking for me. Eventually he grew bored with searching, and I could hear him growing farther and farther away.

When I was sure that the steelix was long gone, I busted up out of the ground and headed towards the huge pile of boulders. I began pushing rocks off the pile, tears pouring down my face the whole time. After hours of hard work, I finally pushed the last couple of boulders and gasped in horror.

The creature laying at my feet hardly looked like Fang. His whole body was bloodied and bruised. Gashes and cuts covered his arms and legs. Cracks ran up and down his armor, which was now an ugly shade of yellow from all the dirt and dust that had settled on it. His right arm looked completely crippled and was bent into impossible angles. His head looked deflated somehow and was covered in blood, suggesting that his skull had been crushed. One of his tusks had broken off as well.

Whimpering, I pressed my paw up against his neck. Nothing. No pulse at all. He was dead and what was worst was it felt like it was all my fault.

Now I was back to living on the streets, all on my own. Tears rushed down my face as I hurried through the streets. I was so absorbed in my thoughts that I didn’t even see the Tyranitar there as I whipped around a corner.

I bounced off him like a rag doll and landed hard on my butt. He turned and narrowed his eyes at me. A growl rose from his throat as he stomped towards me.

Somehow I got the feeling that he wasn’t going to invite me to explore the world with him like Fang.
