Rhydell's P.O.V.
*Bang, crash, shattering*
I awake to a loud shattering noise, and I sigh loudly. I get up and head downstairs, still in my pajamas. I see my mum crouched over what appears to be shards of glass from a plate. I rush over, and softly push her to the side.
"Mum it's alright, let me handle this" I say, starting to pick up the shards, hoping not to cut my fingers. My mum tries to stop me but granted, she's pretty weak.
"No sweetie.. it's your birthday, you shouldn't be cleaning..." She says, her voice soft and mellow like always.
"Sshhh mum. It's fine. I'm alright. Go rest. I'll be out in a moment." I say in a firm 'no more arguments' voice, and she sighs, but does what I said. I finish cleaning up the glass, thankfully without any injury. I throw it in the waste bin and go out to the living room. My family is all there, and smiling. My older sister, Layla, gives me a firm hug, patting my back.
"Happy birthday little bro." She says, rubbing my hair. I look up at her and smile.
"Thanks sis!" I laugh slightly when she tickles my side.
"You know, you're getting taller. I swear you've grown an inch." She says teasingly. She's always been much taller than me. I mean, most 12 years olds are taller than 4'7 but hey, what can I do about it? I punch her lightly.
"Oh stop it!" I say and she giggles. Dad clears his throat and I step back from Layla awkwardly. I almost forgot he would be here today. I inwardly groan, but smile outwardly. He outs his hand out and I shake it firmly.
"Happy birthday, Railyn." He says in a rude tone. I cringe at the name.
"D-dad you know I g-go by Rhy-Rhydell now.." I say quietly, hoping he doesn't actually hear me for some reason. He frowns. Dang, he heard me.
"Railyn. You know you'll always be my daughter but you need to grow out of this phase." He speaks harshly, and I bite back tears. Gladly my sister steps in.
"Dad, would it kill you to be nice at least on his birthday?" She speaks to him as if she's not scared, she always has been braver than I.
"I'm being nice. I came here didn't I?" He says, not backing down.
"At least use his pronouns and name, even if you don't accept it. Don't be an ass, James." She says his name and I smile to myself. I love Layla, she's always there when I need her. Since she's been in college, she's been busier but I know I can count on her when I need her. Dad looks ready to boil. His face is slightly red, but he calms himself down.
"I'm not addressing my daughter as my son. If I wanted a son, we would've adopted one. I thought we adopted a normal girl, but apparently we got a confused girl who can't grow out of her damn phase." He speaks in a harsh but calm tone. The tears that have been threatening to spill finally do and I run up to my room. I hear my sister yell at dad.
"Get out. Get out now!" She screams at him and I hear a door slam. Footsteps sound in the otherwise silent house and Layla and mum enter my room and Layla pulls me into a tight hug. Mum walks over and kisses my forehead.
"I shouldn't have invited him... Im so sorry Rhydell. Honey, please cheer up. He's gone now and we need to start celebrating." My mum says in a softer than usual tone. Layla looks me in the eyes and smiles.
"Come on bro, lets go celebrate how awesome I am for being your sister- I mean, how awesome you are." She says in a teasing voice and I chuckle slightly. I wipe my eyes and sniffle.
"Hehe alright sis. Give me a moment, I need to change." I say and usher them out softly. They leave the room and I shuffle through my drawers. I find my binder and pull it on. I search my closet and find my favorite outfit, a violet sweater and black skinny jeans with rips. I throw them on, and look in my mirror. I fasten two chokers on my neck, and smile.
"Looking good, my man, looking good" I say to my reflection, winking and clicking my tongue. I laugh slightly and try to brush my hair, but give up trying to tame it. My hair is curly and thick and impossible to comb. I sigh at my stupid hair but head out, leaving it messy like usual. I hop down the stairs and put on some black hightops. Layla is standing at the doorway.
"Where's mum?" I ask, looking around.
"She said she was getting your present and told me to go get the car started. Come on." Layla motions a 'follow me' and I comply. We sit in the car, Layla in the driver seat and me in the back, mum would sit in the passenger seat. I bounce my knee up and down, drumming with my hands on the head of the passenger chair. Layla turns on the radio to my favorite channel and I thank her. One of my favorite songs comes on and I sing to the chorus. Mum gets in the car and smiles at me letting loose and relaxing, saying nothing. After the song stops, Layla turns the volume down.
"Have you ever thought of being a singer, Ry? You'd be good at it." I laugh slightly at the nickname she used. But I knew she wasn't teasing.
"I have. But I like dancing more." I say in a serious tone. Mum's eyes light up.
"A dancer? Oh baby, you've never told me you liked to dance! You know, back when I was about 17, I joined the English National Ballet school but had to quit due to a spinal injury only a year later. I would be so happy if you followed in my footsteps." She says, her eyes glowing with pride. I cringe slightly. She has Alzheimer's, even though she's still young. She's told me these stories a billion times. I've told her about wanting to be a dancer even more. I'm even in ballet classes at a pristine dance academy for pre-teens. Yes I know, soooo manly, right? But I don't really care because I enjoy it, even if I do get stares and comments. I go along with mum, despite me knowing she's said it a gazillion times.
"Really mum? That's amazing! I'll make you proud as a dancer." I say, my acting getting better.
"Yeah mum, I never knew you were a professional! I'm totally sure Rhydell will be a great dancer!" I can hear the enthusiasm in Layla's voice. Wow, being a theatre major in college really helps her acting. I hear a screech as the car comes to a stop. We stop at my favorite restaurant.
