It's been almost 15 minutes and the screams have slowly began to die down. My mind is all over the place.
"Nothing bad is going to happen to us. Not as long as we stay in here." The man spoke absentmindedly. He was looking up and pacing, deep in thought.
"What if they find us?" I couldn't stop the words from coming out of my mouth. He slowed his pacing and looked over at me. We both stopped talking as our heads snapped to the direction of the screams. bullets were being fired off quickly. I began to shake from fear. Before I knew it there was a presence in front of me.
The man sat directly across from me, our knees almost touching. He sat with his hands folded in front of him, a genuine smile on his face.
"So what's your name?" He asked.
"Hadley." I hesitated.
"Hadley..." he repeated in a much softer voice, almost like he was testing my name. "I'm Chris." he replied. I nodded. Well now I have a name so I don't have to keep calling him 'The Man'.
"What's your favorite color?" he asked now a curious look on his face. I didn't understand why he was asking questions all of the sudden.
"Red." I mumbled. He opened his mouth to speak but we both cringed when we heard a gun shot. This one much closer than any of the others, like it was right inside of the store. A yelp escaped my lips. he was quick to put his hand against my mouth. He once again help up a finger to his lips, silencing me. Another shot had been fired off, only this one was followed by a pain filled scream. A sob sounded from me but it was muffled by his hand that still covered my mouth.
He moved his body so that he was next to me, he pulled me closer to him, I was practically on his lap. He wrapped an arm around my waist. "What's your favorite restaurant?" he whispered quietly.
"IHOP." I mumbled slightly embarrassed. A smile lit up Chris's face.
"Okay." he said quietly, "When we get out of here I'll take you to IHOP." he said.
I couldn't help but smile. from then on we were both quiet. 2 more shots had been fired off but we haven't heard anything nearly as close for about 30 minutes. Chris had stood back up and was once again pacing.
I have a feeling that we are going to be stuck in here until the police handle everything. I wonder if the police have even been called. I let my head gently hit the wall, I stretched out my legs in front of me. they had began to cramp from being crossed for so long. I rummaged through my bags trying to find something to entertain myself with, but sadly all I had was clothes.
A strange noise sounded from my stomach. It took me a second to realize it meant that I was hungry. I blushed at the noise it had created.
I glanced up at Chris who was grinning at me. "Hungry?" He asked. I nodded. He walked a little ways away before returning with a sandwich.
"Where did you get that?" I asked.
"It's my lunch but we can split it." He offered. I smiled at his kindness as I watched him tear it in half. He looked at the two quickly before handing me the bigger half. I shook my head. I felt guilty that he gave me the bigger half of his lunch. I was going to say something but he had already bit into his half. I took a bite and savored the taste. I ate as slowly as I could trying to make myself full.
When I finsihed eating I set my shopping bag down next to me and rested my head on it, laying down. We sat in silence. I listened closely for any sounds outside but all I could hear were the many shots of guns, and the screams of people dieing.
