I couldn't remember much about that night. All I remember is that dad was drunk and me and ruby were worried while sat in the back of his old truck. She looked up at me a few times with a worrying glare. I just took her hand and squeezed it to show I understood. It was beginning to get dark as dad had picked me up from my football match that Ruby had stayed to watch. We won as always. I was star player again. Not that dad cared. Mum always told him to pick me up because he wasn't really a father to me. I looked out of the window to see us swerving cars. He was wobbly while driving and was weaving in and out of the lanes. Me being the older sister I was scared for Ruby my little sister. Before I could do anything to stop my dad and make him pull over we drove down the edge of a mountainside near my street and crashed at the bottom. The last thing I could remember seeing was my dads bloody and lifeless body in the front. His open head lying against the head board. It was something out of a nightmare. I screamed my sisters name before I passed out.

My eyes began to flutter open and I noticed that I was in a hospital. My mother came rushing over balling in tears.
" oh Amber you're awake!! Nurse come quick she's awake" my mother shouted. A nurse came running in smiling gently at me. I looked over at my mother who had now sat down and was on the edge of her seat. The big blue bags that settled under her eyes concerned me. Why hasn't she been sleeping? Oh yeah I'm in a hospital. Thats why Amber you smart arse. The nurse slowly walked over, the smile still plastered into her dainty face.
" hello Amber my name is Sophie and I have been your nurse for the past 6 weeks" she said softly. 6 weeks!! I've been in this stupid hospital for 6 weeks. I began to move and sat up slowly but I felt like something was wrong. I didn't press on as there was a lot I didn't know yet. I've only just woken up for gods sake. Then my heart remembered Ruby and Dad. My heart thumped harder and faster against my chest.
" where's ruby and dad?" I asked softly.
" Amber..." my mum began before I interrupted.
" where is Ruby, I know dads dead" I said my voice slightly hoarse as I held back tears. The image of the blood and his body flashed infront of my eyes before I shook my head to get rid of them, causing the pain to surge through me again as I winced in reaction.
" Amber, Ruby passed away two weeks ago. She had fatal brain injuries and wasn't going to survive" my mum said tears still streaming down her face. My little sister. The one I was always supposed to protect and look after. My blood best friend for life. Was dead. And it was all my fault. I know I know. Blaming myself is pointless, but it's the only thing I can do.
The nurse checked my charts and changed all the wires in my arms. I couldn't really feel most of my body parts. Especially my legs. They felt odd and I didn't like it. I could hardly move because my head floated whenever I tried. So I just sat where I was glaring at the door.
Deep down I wanted my sister to come running in with her bright red hair and those cute little freckles. A tear slipped down my cheek as I began to zone out and remember all the good times I had with her.

My dad was a whole other story. He split up from my mother when I was nine. He was abusive to my brother and mum and hit me a couple of times. I hated him. I really did. For the pain he caused my family and the love he never showed me. I was just a mistake. A replica of her. I wasn't Amber his eldest daughter. I was a clone of my mother in his eyes. He adored Ruby. She was the angel. At first I was jealous but I realised that Ruby was only 10 and didn't understand why he pushed me away. It wasn't her fault he started to drink and take drugs. It wasn't my fault he began to sleep around. But he still blamed it on me. I ignored his comments mostly. Pushing his violence away.
I was pushed from my thoughts when my brother walked through the door holding two coffees. When he noticed I was awake he dropped the coffees on the floor and came running over. He hugged me gently and kissed my head.
" hey kiddo how ya feeling?" He said ruffling my hair gently as he sat down next to me. The nurse looked annoyed at the coffee on the floor and began to wipe it up. I giggled slightly.
" I could be better" I said in reply. He didn't let go of my hand as he sat in the other chair next to me apologising to mum for the coffee. She brushed it off and walked out to go get another coffee. The nurse followed soon after.
" you gave us all a shock" Adam said softly. I looked up at him. The pain was filling his golden brown eyes as a tear slipped down his cheek. I brushed it off.
" it's ok it's all over now" I said gently kissing his forehead. He smiled slightly. We talked about Ruby's funeral and what it was like. We laughed and cried. All of a sudden the hallway outside was filled with shouting.
" I'm sorry Mrs Fitzgerald but I need to tell her what happened to her leg"
The nurse said calmly.
" no I will tell her, she needs to know by me" my mother shouted. There was silence until the door burst open and my mother walked in. What on earth were they on about?
" Amber there's something you need to know, in the accident you cut your leg up pretty bad" my mother began. My mind blanked her for a minute as I tried to move my legs. I could move my right one but my left one....it felt...it felt as if there was nothing there. I lifted up the bed sheets and infront of my was an intact right leg. But where my left leg used to be was a gap....

I've only got one leg?
