Ryleigh's POV
I watch the ball drop on the stroke of 12 midnight. I watch the couples below share a kiss or two. Typical. Swept up in the overwhelming romantic feeling of the city.I don't blame them but I won't fall for it. I did once and I will never make that mistake again. His name was Quinton and he is the reason I have such hatred for love and romance. It was his plan all along. I fell hard and he played hard. He played me real hard.
Last I heard he ran away after high school with his bimbo girlfriend to some exotic country to avoid college. Not surprising. He wouldn't have passed anyway. The only time he ever put any thought into anything was when he was thinking about how to break my heart. Bastard.
I can't wait to escape this city. The flashing lights and loud sounds are too much. I want to get away, start anew and just be alone. I've been drowned in this city and I want to do something interesting with my life. And NO, I don't need a man.
I was distracted from my thoughts by a knocking at my door. It was my best friend Emma. She only cared about boys and love. What a waste of time. She is so talented and smart but she won't leave. She's infatuated with a boy and she's convinced he will admit his feelings one day. No chance. He doesn't date, he fucks. Like most guys.
"Ryleigh! Open the damn door!!' she yelled through the wood.
I let her in with a huff. She really does call in at the worst times. I am drained and tired. I don't need this right now.
"What do you want Emma?" I asked frustrated.
"You told me you couldn't come because you were busy! But I saw you watching out the window!"she yelled. "Not fair Ry" she said. Definitely disappointed.
"Sorry Em, I just really didn't want to go, what about Aaron?" I asked.
" Forget about it, I'll see you tomorrow" she said angrily. "By the way, his name is Bryan" she added.
"Just because you hate love, doesn't mean you can treat me and my boyfriend like shit" she stated and left.
I stood there staring at the door my best friend just slammed shut. Was she right? Was I being a horrible friend. I went to bed that night reciting my apology to her in my head.
