In the dark of the night the beasts roam

Oblivious and filled with delight, children run home to home

In the dark of the night, they are not alone

Graves are upheaved, claws come unsheathed

In the dark of the night, creatures stalk unknown

Every child on the street has a monster by their feet

Those with their doors locked up tight, are safe for the night

One by one, street lamps go out

Trick-or-treaters pause with a pout

For they are left without sight, in the dark of the night

All joy dissipated as child and parent were separated

In the dark of the night, fear crept in

The monsters began to grin

In the dark of the night, children are missing

If you listen closely you can hear hissing

In the dark of the night there are screams

The monster smiles as their prey falls apart at the seams

The parents, unhearing, say, "They are not disappearing!

They are with a friend for they do not want tonight to end.

They are alright in the dark of the night"

But it is not as they thought

The parents go home to sleep

Little do they know the monsters still creep

The sun rises on roads dyed red

The parents scream at their kids lying dead

Flesh hewn off the bone

The horrors of the night are shown

"What happened?" they cry aloud

Their sorrow hung overhead like a cloud

"Surely this is but a dream and nothing more.

Upon waking their smiles shall heal hearts so sore."

In the light of the day, a raven sits above the gore

Quoeth the raven

"Nevermore"
