'No no no, this couldn't be happening for real. My entire life can't just wash away like this. He can't just walk in my life and open all its sealed closets, he can't toss my secrets in the air like bits of torn paper. I have spent 26 years protecting them. He can't trample over my image in one day which has taken me forever to build... he can't snatch away my job, my family....he can't ruin my future like this....not for that slut..Nandini Murthy' The cops were dragging him, but his feet were glued to the spot. Couple of his bones were fractured, his face was bruised, blood trickling down from his brows and lips, but all he could feel was the pain of seeing his meticulously designed life crumble right in front of his eyes.

For one last time he looked at Manik, and then he looked around.

In a last ditch attempt, Neel jolted his handcuffed hands, freeing himself from the grip of the poor policeman, who hadn't seen this coming, swept off a heavy copper flower vase lying around, and mustering all the strength in his body, flung it at Manik.

Nandini, standing close to Manik, was the only one to have seen Neel break away. Horrified, she lunged forward, throwing herself at Manik & they both fell on the ground, missing the flying vase by a whisker.

Shocked out of their wits, everyone dashed to catch hold of the bastard while Manik, still trying to make sense of what had just happened, rolled over to check on Nandini.

Much to his horror, blood was gushing out from a deep cut on her forehead. She had hit the table behind them , while falling down.

Ranbir and Nishant ran towards Neel, who by now was acting psychotic. They made sure that he was caught, staying there till the cops stuffed him inside the van and sped away towards the police station. The rest of the people present, huddled around Nandini.

"Maine bola tha aapko, yeh Neel ek din bohot bari problem create karega hamare liye, par aap ne kuch sunna kahan hain, aap ne to wahi karna hai jo aap ko theek lagta hai. Ab dekhlo, jate jate usne yeh kya kar diya." Chachi who had kept mum so far, could no more hold herself back. This bit had come as a nasty surprise and she got nervous seeing an injured Nandini cringing in pain on the floor.

"Navya, call the doctor ASAP!!" Manik picked Nandini up and was about to take her to one of the rooms when Amms stopped him."Mujhe tumse baat karni hai Manik."

"Not now, ok, can't you see she is bleeding." Shrugging Amms off, Manik took her inside and the others followed. Within a few minutes the doctor arrived, dressed her wound and examined her. The cut was deep, but thankfully, only superficial. He assured everyone that there wasn't much to worry about & left after giving her a mild sedative.

******

Nandini was sleeping inside, under the impact of sedatives, surrounded by her family and navya when  Manik, having remembered that Amms wanted to speak to him, came out."Did you want to say something?"

Amms was sitting alone on a plush couch in the empty hall, her head resting backwards, her eyes closed. Hearing Manik's voice, she stirred.

"Thanks for everything you have done for my child but ab tum please yaha se chale jao" She stood up and spoke calmly in formal tone.

"Excuse me?" Manik asked, shocked. She wasn't sounding as bitter as before, but after whatever had happened, why was she still asking him to leave?

"Please leave Manik. Main nahi chahti ki tum Nandini ke paas ek minute bhi aur ruko."

"Are you serious?? She is injured. Behos hai wo and you are asking me to leave her like this?" He paused to draw in a breath "What do you want Amms...I mean Mrs. Murthy ? Why do you hate me so much... Kya, Kiya kya hai maine....? YOU had chosen NEEL, for Nandini... And yet its me who should leave???"

"yes, you should, because jo kuch bhi hua uske saath, you are responsible for it. Aaj jo wo bed pe pari hai na, wo chot bhi use isi wajah se lagi hai kyunki she was trying to guard you."

"What do you want to say? Kehna kya chahti hain aap?"

"Tumhe dikhai nahi deta ya tum dekhna nahi chahte that your love is poison for Nandini. Har baar wo tumhe bachane jate hai aur khud jal jaati hai. Neel turned out to be a criminal but Neel, Nandini ke life mein aaya hi kyun? Because you Manik Malhotra, deserted her one fine day."

Manik was stunned. He kept on gaping at her face, unable to find an appropriate answer. Who deserted whom, he didn't desert her, he left her behind for her own good and because his dad had promised to sort out everything. If anyone felt betrayed, it was him, if anyone was alone, it was him...what was Amms talking about?

"Tumhari problem yeh hai Manik Malhotra, ki you are a spoilt son of a rich father. Pehle din se I didn't like you, Infact the day I first saw you, gunda gardi kar rahe the tum college mein. Jo humility ek insaan mein honi chahiye who tumme kabhi thi hi nahi... aur hogi bhi kaise? Kabhi kisi cheez ke liye struggle nahi karna para , bina mange hi sab kuch to virasat mein mil gaya na.

We are middle class people, but we have a certain way of living. We have our ethics and you respected neither. It was you who taught Nanidni to lie, to stay out till post midnight and then hide it from us. Wo pehle aisi nahi thi, uski parvarish is tarah nahi hui thi par tumne use badal diya.

Fir tum log Mangalore aye and wahan tumne aur tumhare doston ne bohot tamasha kiya, but fir bhi I gave you a chance because I saw love in Nandini's eyes for you. Par tum to tum ho Manik Malhotra, in return of her love, tumne bina kuch bataye use chor diya. I guess you know ho much she had fought with all of us to let her go with you to Denmark, but what did you do in return...let her die. Itni bhi courtesy nahi ki tum ek call hi kar lete. Aur 3 saal baad when she had started to forget you, you returned and once again you are messing up her life."

She waited for Manik to respond, but the poor fellow was confused and hurt that he didn't know how or what to say.

"Yes you are right" she contiued, "You are right, Neel was a bad choice. Nandini, Shanno, they both tried to tell me par maine kisi ki baat nahi suni. My hatred for you made me so blind that I couldnt see Neel's truth. Maine dekha hai Nandini ko har din, har pal tumhare liye marte huye and compared to the suffering you gave her, koi bhi dusra larka was better. Galti ho gayi mujhse that I selected Neel, but tum Manik Malhotra, how are you any better?

Tum kaun ho? Tumhare paas khudka kya hai? Jab man hua, dosti kar li, jab man hua vanish ho gaye, aur fir man hua to fir laut gaye...she is just a toy for you, hai na.... Like all the other toys your father has been buying for you. But Nandini is not a toy and I will not let you play with her anymore...so I request you to just leave... char din royegi, fir khud samhal jayegi. You are like poison for her and she is addicted to this poison. Please leave her alone and let her live."

Manik trailed back in slow unsteady steps and then he turned around and left...left without explaining his side of the story, left without saying Goodbye to Nandini, left without thanking his friends, left only with a mind full of nasty questions and a heavy pierced heart. If only people didn't judge a book by its cover, a man by his clothes or the cars he drove. If only Nandini's grandmom could see the claustrophobic walls he had grown up in. yes, his dad had indeed bought him an army of toys, that lay untouched in one corner of his dark room, while he sat in another corner, playing his guitar.

If only he could show what Nandini meant to him, if only he could show the bruises he still carried on his body from the accident that had gone sore after he had forced Nandini to hit him. If only he could take her to the lonely nights in the hospital or show her the frustration of a man who had no memory of his past.

But then people hear what they want to hear, see what they want to see. He wasn't going to explain any of it to Amms. If she despised him, let her, like the rest of the world.

Ranbir and Nishaant, who were returning after the police van had left, saw Manik walking out. Ranbir called out to him, waved his hand at him , but looking right through them, Manik got into his car and drove towards his home. His cell lying on the passenger's seat kept buzzing, but he didn't spare a glance. The world around him was fading out, as his vision started to cloud.

This was supposed to be a happy day. They were supposed to celebrate after exposing Neel, but here he was, walking alone, carrying the burden of lies and blames.
