Chapter One

At the moment of death.. the heart stops. The skin slowly becomes tighter and tighter as it turns into an ashy gray color. All of the muscles relax and the body's tempeture drops every hour. The skin starts to become purple and waxy. The lips, fingernails, and toenails fade to a pale color. The hands and feet turn into a purplish-blue color and the eyes gracefully sink into the skull. Death is so tragic.. and yet so.. peaceful. Something about it just makes everyone stop and re-evaluate their lives. It makes everyone pause and think about how valuable and short the human life is.

My name is Vanessa Jenson. Personally, I am a Medical Examiner, or M.E. for short. I have to deal with death everyday. I guess I'm just used to it. No matter how gory things get, I'm never really surprised. You can't possibly imagine how many different ways there is to murder someone. I've seen them all. My job is to examine the body and determine how they died. Most of the time it's easy, but some murders like to be creative.

Unfortunately, I'm just the Medical Examiner. I usually don't get to see the full case as it unfolds; but you see, my best friend just so happens to be a homicide detective. His name is detective Ryan Collins. He fills me in on the mystery and sometimes he gets to bend the rules a bit, so I can come along and act as his partner and help solve the crime. Infact, if there's a murder today, after I identify the body I get to come with him as he interrogates.

Later on we got a call from one of Ryan's fellow detectives. He told us that there was a possible homicide victim in a motel not far from the police station. Trying to hide my excitement from him, I graciously excepted his offer and we rode down town to the crime scene.
