"Shay, Hurry up or you will be late for your first day at your new school!" The voice cut through my sleeping state. I open my eyes and feel like throwing up immediately.
"Okay mom." I manage to mutter out and sit up in my bed. My parents just made us move from nice old Maine, to the other side of the country to San Francisco. Guess they wanted a change of scenery but who really knows.
The mirror catches my eyes, my eyes shining amber and my hair is a mess. I just grab my EMT hoodie and throw on some jeans. I was certified as a EMT immediately when I turned 18 this past year. Before I knew it, I was outside my new school. Grayson Valley High School, it was a large building and there were so many students walking about.
"Shay, you will be fine." My mom said taking me out of my deafening thoughts. I just nodded and grabbed my bag and started walking towards the stairs with my head down. I heard a shout loud in my ears and the next thing I felt was pain in my shoulder.
"Oh my god, I am so so sorry. Are you okay?" A girl with Hazel eyes and shoulder length brown hair was on the ground in front of me.
"Yeah, I am fine." I held my hand out to help her back up and watch her intently.
"Okay, wait are you new here?" I just nod.
"My name is Abby MacQuaid, and you are? Or should I just refer to you as mysterious stranger?" Her eyes lit up, and I smirked softly to myself.
"I mean that works" I said and then started to back up slowly. And she grabbed my hand to stop my movement. The flush and warmness in my cheeks became evident.
Before she even had a chance to open her mouth, I said "Shay, My name is Shay Carlin."
"Welcome to Grayson Valley High, Shay Carlin" She says as she turns away from me and walks up the stairs away from me.
I stand there in confusion, my mind racing, trying to piece together what I am feeling. I shake my head, and walk up the stairs. I open my bag and pull out my schedule.
"First class is Biology, with Mrs. Aston, Room 110" I say aloud as the stop walking and start looking around my surroundings. The hallway has bright streams of sunlight streaming in from the windows and there are rows and rows of lockers on both sides of me. As I am looking around the hallway, I feel eyes on me and a giggle catches my ears. I turn my head slightly and see Abby standing there whispering with some other girl.
I just look at her and smile, what is happening. Finding Biology was so much harder than I thought, I tried to get into the class before the teacher noticed me, but it was in vain.
"And your name is?" A woman who I assume was Mrs. Aston said to me in a soft but kind voice. She was on the short side, with brown hair and eyes. Looked to be probably in her thirties.
"I a-am Shay Car-Carlin" My nervous stutter escaped my lips before I had a chance to breathe and collect all my different thoughts.
"Well, welcome to my class. Hmm, lets find a seat for you" She smiled at me to calm my nerves. I was so busy with my head down, that I didn't notice any other students in the room.
"Shay? Here's a seat for you. Next to Abby" As soon as I heard the name, I shot my sight from the ground back into hazel eyes. I just nodded to the teacher and went to go sit in my newly assigned seat. I didn't say a word, couldn't trust my voice.
"Okay class, so today we will be talking about genetics. We will pick up where we left off talking about Punnett squares" Mrs. Aston's voice faded into the back ground as a note slid onto my desk. I slowly took it and unfolded it.
"No need to be so nervous, the stuttering is cute though" Her writing was nice, and I didn't know what to respond.
"Cute?" the simple question was all my shaking hand could write. I slid the note back to her and looked up to her smile and I swear my heart skipped a beat.
The bell rang before I could get another response from her, and for some reason I couldn't wait for the next biology class.
The next class of mine was English and that flew by, and lunch was here before I knew it. The sun was streaming through so I decided to sit under a tree out in the courtyard.
"Hey, you must be the new kid?" Some guy with green eyes said as I sat down.
"Yeah" The only reply I had to his question.
"I am going to let you in on a secret, I would stay away from Abby." His voice hushed and for some reason it made my blood boil. I looked up from my spot and saw Abby in the distance staring at us.
"Why would I?" I asked, my voice raising in anger.
"She's lesbian, and it is wrong. Shouldn't associate with that." His eyes glowing in the sunlight, and his tone loud enough that anyone could hear. I saw Abby's face drop in the distance, and I stood up from my spot and get into this guy's face. Didn't even care to ask his name.
"It's 2016 dude, and she can love who she wants too and it should be without judgement. By the way, Abby has more game than you and I can tell that already. I would totally rather be with Abby instead of a closed minded Neanderthal like yourself, so how about you stop tearing people down and get out of my face." I growled and shoved him away from me. His face was in shock and I saw Abby's mouth drop. I didn't even turn back to get my backpack. I just ran away from the scene.
My breath was ragged and I saw that I ended up on the other side of the school where there was a bench and like a garden area. My phone was in my bag so I had no idea what time it was.
"Shay!" I heard a voice yell in the distance and saw Abby.
"Hey" I said, my breathing heavy and my voice quiet.
"No one has ever stood up to Brock like that before, and especially not for me." There was a hint of a smile tugging at her lips.
"Well, it's true what I said." My breathing starting to calm.
"I appreciate it." She said as she pulled me into a hug and I hugged her back. Feeling happy and safe for the first time since moving here.
