(Kyle's POV)

*Flashback*

"Please stop!" I screamed, crying as much as my 6 year old eyes could handle.

"I am your father! YOU WILL NOT TALK BACK! Do you understand?" my stepdad said hitting me with the belt buckle once again.

It started after my mom died. She had married my step dad after my dad died, a few months before my sixth birthday. I hated Matthew from the start of their relationship. I only found out they were dating two months after they had started.

I didn't know what to do. So I did what most kids would do, cry. I had friends and teachers I could tell. But, I knew even at a young age what my step dad would do to them.

"Shit, I'm getting late for school!" I say to myself out loud, groaning. I get out of bed to get for school. I just pull on a white t-shirt and jeans. To be honest, I could care less what people think of me at school. I'm just that kid who sits in the back of class reading, not paying attention, and still getting A+'s. Yup.....just that kid. Who has 4 friends.

"Kyle, you're gonna be late to school again, idiot!" My step dad, Matthew, yelled from the couch in front of the TV. I doubt he's doing anything productive, probably getting fat from all the fucking chips he eats. I finish off my outfit with a red hoodie that I hide my headphones in class with. I make it to the bus stop just in time, and sat down with my best friend Mia, short for Amelia. My other friends, Carah, Anara, and Logan don't take the bus. We have no clue how they get to school. Its mystery........yaaaa. Totally. Not. Awkward.

"Hey," I said as I sat down next to Mia.

"Hey Kyle," she said back, "how's it going with Matt?"

"Do you really need to ask?"

"Just thought maybe it was getting better." Mia said defensively.

"Why would that ever happen," I said and Mia sighed.

Mia is the positive one. She's always looking at the bright side, even if the bright side is a morsel of dark grey in an ocean of black. She's always trying to make everything seem better, even when there isn't anything good about it. I appreciate her effort, but it doesn't work for me. Mia is the only one who has seen my bruises and scars on the surface, and the scars on my soul. She knows there's nothing to do about it, but she tries to help anyways. It's just the way she is. I, on the other hand am very depressing and have a black soul drenched in blood. For the rest of the ride, Mia stayed quiet. That's when I started to worry. Mia's never quiet.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"I'm fine," Mia said so suddenly, I didn't believe her. Her eyes lost that glazed look. After, we got off the bus, Mia pulled me into a corner.

"Look, I'm sorry about this, and I have to make it quick but..." she started to
