Y/N's POV

"Y/N," Jack whispered in my ear,"I love you."

I felt tears brim my eyes. That was the first time that anybody had told me that in years. Did he mean it? Or was it just the heat of the moment.
"Jack,I-" I was cut off by a loud crash from outside. Jack and I quickly ran out of the apartment and,in the hallway, was a tall, dark haired man throwing items out of his apartment. Half of a TV stuck out of a wall and around it was glass from shattered bowls and plates. The man continued to angrily chuck his belongings out the door.

I looked at Jack and knew what he was thinking. I reached to grab his arm but he was already running over to the enraged man."Jack no!" I called as he entered the room. I chased after him and when I got to the doorway I saw Jack trying to calm the guy by speaking soft words. The man paced back and forth around the room, breathing heavily and pulling at his hair.

"Hey," Jack soothed,"What's wrong? Calm down, buddy you'll be ok. Deep breaths." The man leaned fell to the floor and balled up with his knees to his chest. "What's wrong?" Jack asked, sitting next to the man and placing a hand comfortingly on his back.
"M-my g-girlfriend..." The man sobbed,"S-she's....she's d-dead."

Jack closed his eyes for a moment and when he opened them I thought a saw tears in his eyes but he quickly wiped them. "What was her name?" He asked calmly.
"A-Amy." The man stuttered, taking a shaky breath. Jack turned to me and mouthed "Call the hospital." I did and within about an hour an ambulance came up and took the unstable man. "Here's my number." Jack smiled and handed the guy a torn piece of paper. The guy nodded and the paramedics took him away.

"Why did you do that?" I asked Jack as we walked back to our apartment room.
"Do what?" He asked, opening the door for me like a gentleman.
"Risk your life like that. He could have killed you." I stated, stepping inside. Jack turned and locked the door.

"Every life matters..." He hesitated,"Even....even if their life is broken. That man had a girlfriend,a house,a life,a heart....and...." He stared at the floor in thought, "Even if nobody else cares....or....is there for him....I wanted him to know that I care. And that he can survive. He's got to. For me,for you,for the people he sees every day when he walks down the street. He can do great things, but not if he doesn't survive. At this point,he might be broken, but not destroyed."

Jack shakes his head as if waking up from and dream and goes into the kitchen,"Want something to eat?" He asked normally. My mind was still buzzing with the words he had just said. He really seemed to care. How? How can he find so much compassion for a person he never knew existed until about an hour ago...

My thoughts were cut short and I felt Jack hug me from behind. "What's wrong, little one?" He whispered sweetly.
"Nothing." I said. It wasn't necessarily a lie,but it wasn't the truth either. There was a lot on my mind and a lot of things I didn't understand. When things happen that I don't understand I have a tendency to over-analyze them, taking every detail and turning it into either the worst or the best thing possible.

"You know,I'm not as naive as you think." He said. His warm breath against my neck sent shivers down my spine,"Don't be scared, kitten." Jack chuckles.
"I-I just don't understand..." I say quietly.
"Understand what, sweetheart?" Jack's nicknames make me blush.
"How are you so happy?"
Jack hesitates before saying,"Let's go for a walk."
