It was the day of the Halloween dance. For some reason we had the day off of school. I woke to the familiar sound of my mother coming home from getting groceries.
"Rory! Get up! It's 10:30! Hazel! Why didn't you wake her up?" her voice rang out through the house along with the crinkling of bags and the smaller following footsteps of my younger brother Phillip.
"Sorry, Mom! I was distracted, I guess," my 16-year-old sister, Hazel called from the living room.
I rolled out of bed, trying to land on the pillows I had taken off of it the night before, but ended up nose first on the hardwood floor. "Owwwwww!" I groaned. I got back up and grabbed my phone, which vibrated in my hands, indicating someone had texted me.
I scrolled down through my notifications reading the senders' names. All the usuals, but one caught my eye. The number was unknown. I tapped on it and it revealed the full message.
So, how about that construction? I guess you're kind of into that since that's all you've said when you talk to me. Why am I sending this? I guess I'll see you tonight? I wish I could just talk to you! Sorry! Bye?
That was weird. I decided not to respond, but instead to get back to my other friends' texts in the group chat.
Charlotte: Hey girl!
Me: What's up?
Charlotte: So are we actually going to this thing?
Lacey: I don't like this. It's just gonna be the whole awkwardly hover over the snack table situation all over again, isn't it.
Bella: Hey, I have no problem with that.
Me: You guys! This'll be fun! Free music requests, my terrible dance moves, and free food! What more could you want? So? Whaddaya say?
Bella: I'm in.
Charlotte: Well, if Bella goes, my dancing will be better by default. I'm in too!
Bella: I find that offensive.
Lacey: Guess I'd better come too. You guys always make everything more fun!
Me: Ey, thanks chicklet!
Charlotte: I have to go. Meet you at the venue? 7?
Lacey: I'll be there!
Bella: Same!
Me: Be there or be square amiright?
Lacey: Rory?
Me: Yeah?
Lacey: You are the most entertaining person I've ever met.
Me: Thanks.
Bella: My brothers are wreaking havoc! See ya!
Lacey: Bye!
Me: See ya in the later zone!
"Rory! Get in here and help with groceries! And by lunchtime I expect your room and the bathrooms to be pristine!" my mom declared.
"Okay, Mom!"

Student Council wanted to make this year's Halloween dance "classier." They added a theme, rented a ballroom, got a pretty fantastic buffet table, and an impeccable mix of live ballroom music and a DJ. The theme was masquerade ball, which was pretty cliché, but I didn't mind. This was a night where I could be anyone I wanted to be.
