Aurora's POV

I woke up to the scent of pancakes and bacon, making me realize how hungry I was. I pulled my cell out from under my pillow, to see that it was 8am, Sunday morning. I smiled as I thought about my graduation ceremony and the party that my parents threw for all of my friends and I. As I made my way to the bathroom, I thought about how much I'd miss my friends as we went our separate ways for college. I brushed my teeth and splashed some water on my face. I looked in the mirror ran a hand through my bed-head of golden brown hair. I slipped on a pair of dark skinny jeans and my favorite 3OH!3 t-shirt. I laced up some Converse high tops. I sat down in front of my vanity and applied a thin coat of mascara around my blue-grey eyes, before I headed downstairs to the kitchen to get something to fill my empty stomach.

I saw my dad standing over the stove making eggs, while humming the tune to "It's a Small World". I grinned when I saw his Kiss the Cook apron. I slowly crept up behind him and screamed "BOO!" as loudly as I could. He didn’t even flinch!

He turned around and looked at me, with a knowing smile on his face, saying, "Sorry kiddo, maybe next time." He burst out laughing as he ruffle my hair, making me scowl at him.

"Dad! Stop calling me kiddo, I'm 18, just as much of an adult as you are."

"Whatever you say, squirt," he said happily, gave me a kiss on the forehead. I loved my dad, no matter how annoying he could be. We had always been close. It amazed me, and many other people, how my dad- Jonathan James, big time lawyer- still had so much time to spend with me, his only child. My mom on the other hand, didn’t live in the same state as us. She was in New York most of the time, while we resided in Pennsylvania. It’s not like my parents were divorced or anything. They were happily married, but my mom, Catherine James, was the head detective of NYPD, so many criminals hated her for busting them. The creepers of New York were ruthless, and would hurt me as quickly as they’d hurt her, so when she was promoted, she moved us out of state, so I could finish high school safely.

My dad put all the food on serving platters, just as my mom and grandma came into the kitchen. My grandma was fussing at mother about her job, as always. My dad and I had accepted the fact that my mother loved her job, keeping everyone safe, and who were we to get in the way of someone else’s dreams? She was a great mom, and we loved her, no matter where she was.

“Hi Grandma,” I said with a smile as I gave her a hug, while my parents exchanged pleasantries with one another.

“Why hello there baby doll, how did you sleep last night?” she asked as we all sat down at the table to start eating.

“Just fine, and you?”

“I was a bit restless, because I was too worried about your mother going back to New York this evening,” she said, narrowing her eyes at mom. I chuckled as my mom let out an exaggerated groan, “Now don’t you start with the disrespect young lady.”

Dad and I burst out laughing when my mom said, “Sorry mother,” rolling her eyes like a young teenage girl.

By this point, I had already piled pancakes, eggs and bacon onto my plate and was shoveling the food down my throat as if I hadn’t eaten in days. “Jeez Ari, save some for the rest of us, would ya?”

I looked up at my mom with a mouthful of food and a sheepish grin on my face, as she tried to fight back a smile, love shining clearly in her eyes for me. I swallowed slowly and said, “Oh, there’s enough for everybody! Can you please pass the syrup?”

My family laughed at my open greediness as I drowned my pancakes in syrup.

Catherine’s POV

I looked at my daughter, grinning like a kid on Christmas morning, with syrup dribbling down her chin as she laughed at something my husband said. I loved Aurora so much, and since she was my only child, it gave me even more initiative to keep her safe, I didn’t want to lose her. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to ask her about this job in New York with the rest of the police department. I knew it was extremely dangerous, that anything could go wrong. I really did not want her to accept, but she was 18, about to go off on her own, getting a job, going to college. She could do this whether I wanted her to or not, all NYPD had to do was call her directly to see if she would this.

My smile must’ve slipped off my face, because I heard Aurora speaking to me, with a concerned look spread across her beautiful features, “Mom? Are you okay?”

I pasted on a fake smile, “Yes honey.”

She gave me a disbelieving look, but didn’t argue and just nodded. The rest of breakfast went normally, with Ari just sneaking little glances at me. An hour or so later, we dropped my mother back off at the airport, she lived with my sister in Denver. We said our goodbyes and drove back to the house.

As the three of us walked back into the house, I took a deep breath and said softly, “John, Ari, I need to speak with you. Meet me in the family room in 5 minutes?”

Ari looked at me skeptically, John just looked confused, but they both said, “Okay.”

I ran up to John and I’s room and grabbed all the paperwork and information about this job from my suitcase, and headed back downstairs. When I got to the den, I stopped at the doorway, just worried about Aurora’s choice. I wanted to calm down before I went inside, so I took a few shaky breaths and counted to 10. I walked into our favorite room of the house, deep in thought as I looked between my husband and daughter.

“Mom?”

A/N: I have a couple of things to go over with you-

·         This is my first story, so please leave some constructive criticism in the comments below!

·         Sorry if this is short, it’s only 3 pages on Word :P

·         I’m also sorry if the cliff hanger is kinda lame… teehee(:

·         I’m thinking about characters, so for our main girl, Aurora, I was thinking about using Jojo, singer and actress. She’s a beautiful girl, inside and out, and it really helps that her hair has been different colors. You’ll see why later on (: I’ve included a picture of her on the side.

·         I'm also sorry if this chapter was a bit boring, it was just to give a little background on their situation and stuff.

Thanks for reading!(:
