I was tired of the clanging of the metal below our feet. My main priority was to get my family to safety. It would be rough but we need to reach the emergency escape pods. I knew I wouldn’t be able to make it, but my wife and only child could. I was in a bad condition, my chest and upper left arm were slashed and I’m losing a lot of blood, we are to far from home to get immediate medical attention. Our ships medical center is trashed so that didn’t do me any good.I was carrying my four year old son Christopher who was completely terrified. I wouldn’t blame him if I was his age I would be as well. We were coming up on the maintenance hall were the pods were located, and I fell on my knees still managed to keep Christopher in my arm. My wife stopped running and came back to me.
“William please get up! We don’t have time, we have to go!” She was rushing me to get up. I put Christopher on the the metal platform, and got up slowly getting enough energy to walk a little further to the escape pods. We made it to the pods, I leaned my sweaty head against the control panel to the pods.
“Christopher get in there with mommy it’ll be alright.” I said as best I could, I could feel myself dying and I was trying my best not to show it. I punched in the password to activate the pod, before I did anything else I leaned inside the pod.
“Savannah get Christopher into his se...” I ran out of breath. I coughed, and I could feel that I was becoming pale.
“Daddy are you okay?” Christopher asked with tears in his eyes. I didn’t know how to answer him.
“Christopher I love you, and your mother so much.” I pressed the seat lock on the panel which wouldn’t unlock until the pod reached it’s destination.
“William! What are you doing? Please get in here with us. You’ll be okay!” Tears poured out of Savannah’s eyes. I started to cry and laid my head back against the pod panel.
“I have to stop the ship from reaching Earth.” I reached over and activated the pod door. It shut and I saw Christopher’s face devastated it was beat red and he was trying to reach for me. I turned on the intercom, they could hear me but I wouldn’t be able to hear them.
“I love you both.. I’m so sorry. Don’t ever forget about me.” I pressed the launch button, and just like that they were gone. I set the pod coordinates to the Atlantic Ocean near Florida so hopefully they will make it safely. I couldn’t help but to continue to cry, I reached over to grab onto the metal walls of the ship. I walked my way to the communications office which was right around the corner. I unlocked the door and walked over to the desk were the computer was. I pressed a button which brings up a hologram screen. I brought up the family folder and added a new podcast. I had to get this out to everyone.
“October 18, 2053. Location: within Earth’s orbit. This William McCalister on board the McCalister Family ship vessel. Yesterday we took a family vacation to the moon base resort. Somehow a creature of some sort came aboard my vessel. It killed my brother and a friend of mine, they were slaughtered like animals. The creature appears to be the size of a mature grizzly bear. It’s hard to describe what it looks like, as shadows seemed to radiate from the beast. It’s fleshy body slithered across the floor, but acts as tough armor. The claws that it had were sharp and meant to pierce. So it may then drag victims to it’s large mouth filled with square teeth which ground the bodies instead of ripping the flesh off of the deceased. It managed to slash me, tearing a good portion of my chest skin off, and my arm is pretty torn up as well.” I took a minute to collect myself. I started to tear.
“I ejected my family from the ship in the escape pod without me. They are headed safely to Earth, and maybe already there. I had the ship coordinated automatically to head to Earth, but with the creature out around the ship’s dock somewhere I wasn’t able to change anything. I have a plan to stop the ship from entering Earth’s atmosphere, I plan to destroy the ship myself and not let this creature arrive on Earth. This is my final report hopefully this will be sent successfully to the vessel base back home. My last request is to tell my family I miss them, and that I love them.” I stopped the recording, and sent the file to the base hoping they receive it without a problem. I laid back in the chair for a second and Rubbed my hair and I opened a storage container, and grabbed a certain item I needed. I headed to the engine room, knowing the creature would be in there. On my way I gave myself time to think about my family, and it would be my last chance to think about Christopher’s future, knowing I wouldn’t be there when he gets into school, learns how to drive, get married, or even be there with him when he becomes a parent himself. I thought about Savannah and how we met, I smiled a little thinking about it, and I thought about our wedding which was one of the best days of my life, including the birth of Christopher.
I made it to the engine room, I could hear the snarl of the creature, it sounded like it was feeding. I activated the panel to open the door. I looked upon the creature which took everything away from me. I pulled the self destruction device out of my pocket which I grabbed from the office. I set it to destruct when I let go of it. I was so sick of just looking at this thing, I ran towards the monstrosity, and I readied the device in my hand. The creature swiftly turned around and shoved it’s claws through my stomach, the blood rushed out of my mouth and body. I still wasn’t dead. I dropped the device.
The entire engine room blew up the vessel, I flew out through the only window in the room. Floating in space I felt as if I was still alive. I could see the stars, and my blood flowed around my body. I could see the explosion of the vessel. This is it I killed it, and this is the end of me. A chill ran down my back, I looked at the stars wishing for my family's safety. My life flashed though my eyes as I closed them, and all I could see was my father reaching out for me. It’s finally over.
