Prologue

“So what do you think of the school so far, Aleks?” asked Rebecca.

I looked up from my tray of food and into Rebecca’s crystal blue eyes. She was chewing on a salad leaf and a dribble of ranch dressing remained on her upper lip.

“I love it,” I answered, looking back down at my food with an air of unimportance in my tone.

“C’mon,” laughed Kevin, “you’ve got to have more to say than that.”

I gave a cock of the head as I heard “c’mon.” I had never heard that before. I’d have to ask Mr. Andrews later what it meant.

“I really don’t,” I replied plainly, staring down at my food again. Making eye contact with these people wasn’t the easiest for some reason.

I received silence as a response, and I looked up to make sure they were still there. Rebecca shrugged and Kevin turned back to me, and I realized I had missed some sort of gesture between the two of them.

“That’s assumed, I guess,” came an uncertain reply from Rebecca.

A feeling of loneliness once again hit me, and I wished I had answered with as detailed of an answer as Kevin had been looking for. I didn’t know why I felt this way. I wasn’t really looking for any friends. I just wanted to get the day over with. If my awkwardness around new people was such a big problem, then I’d be sure to stay away from friendships at Portsmouth Private.

Silence wore on forever, and I tried not to let it bother me. Then, though, I saw Rebecca grab Kevin’s arm tightly and point at a girl across the room. I looked up and saw a girl with jet black hair and a paler face standing from a table of girls irregularly. She seemed to stumble, but she caught herself in time to regain her balance.

“It’s Bridget,” I heard Rebecca mutter to Kevin. I looked around just in time to see Kevin’s amused look from before cloud into something like disbelief and despondency.

I turned back around and watched as this Bridget girl made her way over to a trash can not too far from us.

“It’s true,” Rebecca gasped, “She is pregnant after all.”

My face twisted into uncertainty, but as I stared closer at her figure, she was indeed.

Bridget looked up at our table and she made her way over to us after making some sort of eye contact with Rebecca.

“Hi Becca,” Bridget said, and I looked at Kevin who seemed to have become engulfed in the forming conversation.

“Hey Bridget,” beamed Rebecca. Her voice of previous gossip turned into that of cheerfulness, acting as if the gossip she had just exchanged had nothing to do with Bridget. I don’t think I’d ever understand girls.

“How was your summer?” asked Rebecca.

“Great. Went to camp again. Jacob and I had such a wonderful time.”

I didn’t know who Jacob was, but with my eyes still trained on Kevin, I saw the muscles in the arm Rebecca clung to tighten and his eyes cloud. Jacob must be important.

“Oh, how wonderful,” Rebecca smiled. She took notice to the clenching in Kevin’s arm and held on tighter.

“Yes, it really was. Ms. Reese will be so thrilled to see you again for chorus. She talked to me about how she missed you at camp.”

“How thoughtful of her. Well yes, I’ll be happy to return as the leader in Women’s Chorale this year. I’m just so sorry I tried soccer last year and gave up on chorus.”

Bridget smiled lightly. I could sense some sort of rivalry between the two girls. I was really glad that I was not involved in any way with this.

“Well, see you fifth hour,” chimed Bridget, waving as she walked back to her table.

Rebecca narrowed her eyes after her, and I gave a light laugh. But Kevin was still somewhere else, so my attention immediately snapped back to him.

“Jacob impregnated Bridget?” Kevin growled out between clenched teeth.

“Kevin, I am so sorry,” Rebecca said with a hitch of sadness in her voice.

“It’s fine,” Kevin said, shaking off her arm and rose to his feet.

“C’mon, Aleks. Let’s get going to Lit.,” he said, grabbing my arm and dragging me with him.

_____________

You probably have no idea what is going on in the story, but by next chapter, which I will post on New Years, you will know exactly what is going on. I've been in love with this concept for the past month now so I had to get it out and published for you. I have a lot on my plate now, what with The Creeptures, ICBO, and now this, but I want to do it, even if chapters are not frequent. I hope you will like this story, as my plans for this are wide-ranged, and I'll see you on New Years.
