CHAPTER 1:
The Start
Chris has just turned 16. She was also having the BEST day of her life. The boy she had liked for a year had asked her out, as her birthday present, she had gotten a nice car, and she had just passed her drivers test.
Chris was an average kid. She made A's and B's and went to parties, but she wasn't having such a great time at home. Her parents were fighting so the peace in her house was gone.
But today her life turned right back around. Her family stopped fighting and made up. She had enjoyed her day, and that was that. Nothing could change her mind. Until she started hearing things. Well she heard voices, but they weren't in her head, she could tell.
"So why do we have to do this.?" She could hear a voice ask. The voice was deep and soothing, almost. It also had a bit if annoyance in it.
"Because we were closer to this place when we started getting reports, and you didn't have to take the job you realize that right?" The other voice would reply. This voice was defiantly a female voice. She had a soft, caring voice. Nearly opposite the mans. Again, she ignore the voices. Occasionally she would hear a burning sound and the voices again.
They were careful not to say their names, for some reason. Finally when she got into her room and they were alone she started talking.
"Okay, I know someone is there so just, show yourself!" I said. There was a long moment of silence, maybe I was crazy, but then I heard a sigh.
"Alright you caught us. I guess we should show ourselves, it's the least we could do." The feminine voice said in reply, and then there was a shimmering in two spaces. One of them were tall, and the other was short. After a few seconds figures started showing. The shorter figure, that I could now see better, was petit and the taller figure was the man. He was also skinny and I could see bulges in his outline hinting at muscles.
Finally they were washed with the colors of their cloths. They were both wearing leather and had black tattoos all over their body. They were all separate and mainly on their arms and legs. A few of the markings were on their neck, but none on the face. The girl had bright red hair and had a glass stick sticking out of her pocket. Her hair came just past her shoulders and was extremely curly. Th man had golden hair, almost white. His hair came to the top of his neck and he was very handsome. The had a sword sheath strapped to his back and sticking out of the bottom of it was the tip of a sword. It was also like glass. All I could do was look shocked.
The girl talked first. "Hi, I'm Clary, and this is Jace." She jest urged to the man now sitting in my desk chair. He waved two fingers in the air and did a partial smile. It was obvious he didn't want to be here. The girl walked over to him and pulled I'm out of the chair. She went whisper I his ear and he was so tall compared to her, she had to get on her tip toes. I assume she said something like 'don't be rude.'
Finally they both looked in my direction and Jace was the one to talk now.
"Look we don't have all day so we need to kno-" but he was cut off by the girl, Clary, she had elbowed his stomach and he doubled over then thumped her head. After that they both just smiled and laughed. I finally snapped out of my moment of shock and said something.
"Okay, how did y'all do that? What is going on?" I demanded. Then I realized I was staring directly into Jace's eyes. They were a golden color and were very very bright. Then Clary cleared her throat very loudly in order to catch my attention to her. Her eyes were green, but also flecked with gold around the edges.
"I guess you ought to know hat we are shadowhunters. We hunt demons and send them back to their world." Clary said.
"Basically we save the world everyday." Jace added. Clary obviously got annoyed by that remark because she rolled her eyes and shocked head. Trust me, this is a lot to take in. I got dizzy all of a sudden and started falling backwards, but before I could hit the ground Clary and Jace had caught me and put me on my bed. They were very fast.
Then before they could start talking again there was a crash outside. Like ten fireworks going off at once. That snapped me back to reality and we all ran to the window facing the streets. There was a crashed cop car outside my house. It had ran into a car parked in the street and there was notice every where. Kids that were awoken crying in there parents arms who were standing I their doorways and car alarms and one loud blood curtailing scream. Someone must have been in the car. Lights were flashing and there was smoke. Whichever car it was, it was about to blow.
Jace started to smile as did Clary.
"How can you guys be smiling!" I questioned accusingly. But they just ran out the door. I shook my head and ran out the door after them. They were already outside. Clary was getting the woman out if the car and Jace had his sword out fighting the cop. I screamed at him to stop but he didn't. Finally Clary joined in distracting the officer from Jace and was fighting it with a dagger. Now Jace was behind the cop and he stuck his blade through the cops stomach. But what happened was the oddest part of the day, the cop's blood was not red, but a reddish black. Finally he sunk to the ground and disappeared leaving behind scorch marks on the ground.
"YOU JUST KILLED A COP!" I screamed at Jace.
"You know what, I guess I did." He replied, rather sarcastically with a smug look on his face and he walked past me to a man with his phone out, apparently calling 911, and took his phone and smashed it. Then he returned to me and Clary and said "We need to leave." Clary nodded and I stayed back. Clary noticed and she grabbed my arm but I was stubborn, so Jace came over and picked me up into his arms. And we went along like that to the subway.
When the train car doors shut Jace set me down and Clary took a seat, I did the same. There were only a few more people in the car, and it turns out they were from my school. They didn't seem to notice me, they only noticed Jace. I guess Clary got jealous because she stood up and hugged him. He kissed her head. Were they a couple? I don't know. The girls from my school then came this way. I looked away.
"So Christina, are you going to introduce us?" Said one of the girls. Her name was Samantha, they are they "populars", if you will, and they hardly knew me, but they knew my name at least.
"I wasn't planning on it, no." I replied and looked at her again. She looked at me and mouth the words 'yes you were' and Jace interrupted us.
"Chris were getting off now, say goodbye to you friends." And I looked up at him. The lighting I the car made it look like there was a halo on his head.
"They aren't my friends Jace. I would rejoice if they died actually." I said smiling up at Samantha. And with that we left the train car. We walked a couple of blocks and the question kept eating at my mind 'are they dating or not?" So finally I broke the silence when I blurted out "So are you two dating or something." And if my mom was with us right now she would have it my shoulder and said no to me, but she isn't so.
"Yes actually we are." Jace answered. And Clary put her head on his shoulder. He also said, as we rounded a street corner, "We are here." But where were we?
"Where are we?" I questioned.
"Just stare at the church and let your mind relax." Replied Clary. I did just that. I stared at the run down church and let my mind relax. Slowly but surely there was a faint glimmer. Like when Jace and Clary first showed them selfs. Then it stripped away completely and it turned out to be a humongous church that wrapped around the street corner. It had an ivory design in the stone brick that made the exterior walls and a greenish tent to the gray. It had a beautiful garden in the front and it made a fence around the outer side do the church.
"Wow!" I exclaimed. "What a church!" I said.
"It's not a church." Said Jace
Clary finished the rest of his sentence "It's an institute."
