Mattie only spent one day in the hospital. Once she got home, and she had a chance to charge the battery of her phone, Mattie realized she had a couple of voice messages. One was from her mother telling her about Brandon. The other was from Brandon's Mom.

Mattie played the message from Mrs. Preston over and over, trying to absorb and accept what she was hearing.

"Mattie, I don't know how to tell you this...Brandon is dead." There was a long silence. Mrs. Preston's voice was trembling when she spoke again. "I know the two of you are no longer together, but I always hoped it was just a matter of time before you found each other again. I know how much he loved you." She began to sob, but then the sobs stopped, and her voice got stronger. "None of us knew how unhappy he was. If we had..." Another long pause. "I just thought you should hear it from me. He left a note and in it, he mentioned you. He wanted you to know that he will always be watching over you. Do you hear me, Mattie? Brandon will never truly be gone. He will always be in our hearts. He will always be with us. My darling son is now an angel watching over all of us."

Mattie spent the rest of the day in a fog — her mind spinning as she kept going over everything that had happened. Her parents came and fussed over her for a few hours. And when they left Rebecca came home from work and fussed over her some more. Mattie had not told her parents about seeing Brandon that weekend. But once Rebecca came home she couldn't seem to stop the words from pouring out. Mattie told Rebecca everything that had happened. All of it. But no matter what Mattie said, Rebecca was convinced everything Mattie remembered was just a work of fiction, a story made up by Mattie's bruised mind.

When it started getting dark Rebecca left to go pick up  pizza.

Mattie made her way out to the porch. The moonlight was casting shadows across the yard. A dark form moved out into the yard. Mattie could see him standing there looking at her.

It was Brandon.

She did not imagine it. She was not crazy. Brandon was standing in her yard.

A voice spoke out from the shadows. A woman's voice. "Your grandma had the gift, not your mom. But I knew you were like your granny."

Mattie turned and looked at Mrs. Johnson. The old woman was standing at the edge of the porch staring at Brandon.

"You can see him?" Mattie asked, her voice trembling.

"Of course I can, child. I've always been able to see the dead." The old woman looked from Brandon back to Mattie. "He's lonely. I tried to warn you, but you wouldn't listen. The boy is lonely, and he has a desperate need to have you with him." She gave Mattie a hard look. "You understand what I'm saying, child?"

"The accident when I was almost run over..." Mattie's words petered off.

"It was him. He'll do whatever he can to have you cross over from this world to the next so you can be with him."

"He pushed me off the cliff. He was trying to kill me." Brandon the boy she had loved for so long had tried to kill her. Mattie wrapped her arms around herself. She felt suddenly very cold.

"Yes," Mrs. Johnson answered quietly. "You'll have to be on your guard." She turned and yelled at Brandon. "You hear that boy, she knows the truth now. She'll be watching out for your evil tricks. Why don't you just go away and leave her alone? You hear me, boy, go away!

Brandon took a few steps back into the shadows and then he was gone.

Mattie looked out into the dark night.

Brandon was gone.

But Mattie wondered — for how long?
