Third-person writing, I wanted to try it. :o Not really a book, just a snippet. But who knows? It'd make a good prologue. Happy Readings!

Chapt. 1 Prologue

Amele stood in the middle of the aftermath examining what had occurred. A gentle breeze passed by, if not for anything else, it only reminded her of the odor. She stiffened and cringed her nose, the rusty smell of blood was nauseating.

Bodies mangled in every possible position dotted her path. Men, women, children...none were spared. She looked down to spot the body of a child, the young girl's innocent face was untouched, but the crimson stain of blood was visible under her gray dress. She knelt down to close the child's eyes.

She swallowed the disappointment. Andreas was right, the village had been slaughtered. There was nothing to be done. She took off her helmet and offered a quick prayer before mounting her horse. She used her cape to wipe off the snow which was gently packed on her helmet.

Finding her courage, she surveyed her surroundings once more. It was a small village, several dozen civilians at most. Every house was broken into and ransacked. She spotted a small stable, farm houses, and a pen, yet no life stock.

It had been long since sunset but Amele could still pick up the scent of the vile creatures. It made her stomach churn. She focused her attention on something else.

Around her were a small party of soldiers, armored in uniform jet-black mail. She stared at the poor group of tired men, their fatigue noticeable. They were trained to stand any ordeal, may it be clashes or nature's own torment. But she knew better, she remembered the day when they were fantastic warriors glad to serve her. They had a sense of glory for their cause. They have stayed with her this long, she reminded herself, nothing has changed. They were the noblest men she could ever wish to have, even if only a handful of them remained.

        "Burn them."

"As you wish," the soldier replied, "Brisingr!" Flames erupted from his hands and caught on to the closest house. Three others followed suit at different corners and began to turn clockwise, each taking a quarter of the village. The flames immediately engulfed everything in its path, working its way towards the center. Smoke rose into the sky, striking against the white of the surroundings, the fires painting the white landscape in brilliant reds. Various hues blotted her vision as she turned her horse around.

Rol, her second in command rode up next to her, his voice quiet but stern, "Where to, Mistress?"

She did not know herself, could she risk returning to the kingdom?

Before she could reply a loud screech echoed from behind her. A soldier knelt limp before falling face first into the snow. His mail had been shredded from the nape of his neck down to this lower waist. A tall creature stood where he had fallen. He was human shaped, with black wings and white claws. He looked at the body and licked the blood off his chin. Before she could process the scene, he leaped to his second target at inhuman speed. The second soldier was down before she had a chance to register the action.

"Vails! They are still here! Retaliate!" She drew her sword and galloped towards the first attacker. As she neared him she jumped off her horse and swung a wide arc, barely connecting to the Vail's left shoulder. His wing flapped wildly.

The Vail let out a harsh hiss and jumped backward. He quickly examined his wing. After satisfied that the wound wasn't severe he lunged at her. Amele immediately felt a heaving pain as the knocked her over and pinned her to the floor. He was stronger, she knew that. With a twist of her wrist, she managed to escape his grasp and connect his head with the butt of her hilt. This dazed the creature giving her enough time to slice his right side arm off. Blood squirted several feet off his body darkening the surrounding snow.

The bloodied creature let out a deafening screech and rose to the air. Now furious, he dived at her with unhindered speed. Amele raised her hand, "Markas!" A blue light shot out hitting him in the chest. The Vail let out one final cry before falling to the ground.

She stood up awkwardly, the beast had done more damage to her than she thought, her left leg was now unable to support her. Another screech from her left shocked her back into her surroundings.  She spotted another mass flying towards her. She knew she couldn't get into a position to defend herself in time. The distance halved. W-Woosh. Two arrows protruded from the Vail's chest mid-flight as the momentum carried him just to the left of her. A soldier stood ten meters from her with his crossbow already nocked with another arrow. She nodded to him before her vision went black.
