Chapter One: Surprise Encounter

I run full speed to my car. He cannot see me. He cannot see me! How was I so invisible in high school? How did I do it?! Channel your inner high schooler, Lauren. Channel it. All you have to do is duck, get in the car, put the car in drive, and drive, Lauren! I tell myself. I begin to put the car in drive when I sadly remember, I left my purse in the foyer of the building I had just applied to work at when I sat down to drink my tea. I may be eighteen, but I forget things a lot. I need to go back in the war zone... and face Jake.

Cautiously, I opened my car door and it took every inch of my strength to keep from turning back. Should I just ditch my purse? It hits me that my wallet and ID were inside of it. This results in me running faster, against my will. I was pretty much broke, living on my own and being a high school drop out left me pretty much broke, and I needed that money. I try to duck while running, so I wouldn't catch Jake's eye. Sure enough, there was a familiar scent near me, and a familiar finger tapped my shoulder.

"Laur, why the hurry?" Jake's smug voice filled the air. His gentle fingers brush my hair behind my ear and I cringe. I haven't spoke to him since... well... the breakup.

Yes, Jake and I had something in highschool. We actually dated up until the beginning of grade 12 of high school, then he cheated and it left me heartbroken because I knew he was the one. I did a lot of things I shouldn't have and well... okay, maybe I lied before. I didn't drop out of high school, I was kicked out, and I was also kicked out of my parents house. I continued to make bad choices even when I had nothing left, Jake made me emotionally unstable. This leads me to where I am today, I finally recovered from my bad state, and now I encounter him.

I just push past Jake. Ignore it and it will go away.

Worst quote ever. He followed me, inside the building. My own blond hair whipped me in the face as I made a sharp turn for where I left my purse. Its not there!

"Looking for something?" A male voice spoke from behind me. I whip around. Jake.

"Give me that," I snatch my purse from his grasp and check to make sure everything was intact inside it.

"You still didn't answer me, what's the rush?" He comments slyly. His green eyes glimmered in the light.

"Why should I answer you?" I reply, trying to keep calm. My rehab coach's strategies for this moment aren't working. I am about to hyperventilate.

"I have a reason you should," he began. "You should respect me."

"And why is that?" I asked worriedly.

"You were just the girl I was looking for, Laur Laur," He uses his old nickname for me. "You should respect me because I am your boss, you are my assistant, welcome aboard, co worker."

A thousand thoughts per second race through my brain as I take in what Jake just stated. I am his... assistant!? How desperate am I for money? I would have to spend the rest of my life working for this monster that broke me years ago. He changed me for the worst and now I'm supposed to let all that go and work FOR him? My throat starts to close and I get a little choked up. I rapidly scratch my rest, nervously. Then the lip biting starts.

"You're lip biting is still cute," he implies that he remembers me always biting my lip when we were together, I guess trying to show me that he once cared about me. Once.

"Okay. Cool. Great. Super. Um is there anyone else I could work for? Other than you?" I ask him, rolling my eyes. I stop scratching my wrist.

"Looking like that..." He points to my attire. "I doubt it. Even if you were dressed appropriately, no. I'm here to stay. Now go fetch me some coffee." Jake slyly winks at me. The guy has the nerve to order me around after all he's done for me! I turn away and let a small tear fall down my cheek, and I face my outfit. A black crop top revealing a lot of my stomach (not my best choice) and booty shorts. Again, not my best choice. To top it off, black converse. Lovely.

I then run to the Starbucks stand across the lobby to get him his coffee, making sure to spit in it several times.
