Prologue

"Mom!" I screamed sitting up, sweat gathering at my hair line.

I heard the creak of the old floorboards as my mother hurried to my room. The door opened bathing the room in light.

My mother was a small woman, with thin brown hair and permanent bags under her eyes as if she was always tired.

She tied her bathrobe and sat on the edge of my bed stroking my hair.

"Was it the dream again?" She asked running her fingers through my hair getting caught on the occasional knot.

I nodded aggressively my breaths hitching from my sobs.

"Honey you still have 7 years you have plenty of time I promise."

"Carter." My mothers voice faltered. She was weak.

"Mom." I squeezed her hand lightly.

Her breathing was slower and more forced every second.

"I always thought I'd die before you because of the sickness." I bit my lip the tears in my eyes threatening to spill.

"Carter don't say that." Her breathing was slower than ever. "Just, just don't be a fool... grow up to be that smart girl you've always wanted to be."

And her chest no longer rose and fell slightly.

Her eyes no longer opened.

She no longer existed.
