I was rolling out some cookie dough for the new pumpkin spider-cookies, contemplating what other Autumn-themed baked goods we could sell, when my friend and boss, Muffet burst into the kitchen, all six, skinny arms flailing around, her violet skin flushed with anger.
"How dare he?!" She shrieked before collapsing into my arms, sobbing repeatedly:
"I'm ruined Dearie, Ruined!" I patted her on one of her shoulders, trying to soothe my dramatic employer."Calm down, Muffin, you said that when John added chocolate chips instead of raisins to those cupcakes, and that turned out amazingly!" I reasoned. She continued to sob, before proclaiming
"There is no possible way that this could be good! Ever!"
"Then tell me what the problem is, so that I can help solve it!" I stressed. She tried to speak several times before spitting out the phrase that had shaken her so terribly.
"G-Grillby's... their croissants from the breakfast menu... are better than mine!" I stared at her for a few seconds, almost disbelievingly, my expression unreadable through the mask I wore over the lower half of my face, before speaking, sarcasm coating my tone as heavily as Avery ices doughnuts.
"Oh no. How terrible." Her gross sobs only increased in magnitude, as I awkwardly pulled my mask up a bit, it having slipped down due to Muffet flinging her arachnoid body at me. I waited it out, eventually pulling her to her feet. Due to her spindly form, she was rather light, much to my relief. I looked her square in her five eyes and spoke solemnly
"Calm. down. There's not much you can do about it other than-"
"Send a spy in to get his recipe!" Muffet interrupted excitedly, her mood swinging like that jazzy orangutan from 'The Jungle Book'. However the fire in her eyes certainly did not need help from a 'man cub' to light it.
"I was actually going to say find ways to improve your recipe, but..." I trailed off. Muffet ignored me, already on a roll.
"Yes! I could send you in, you're a good actress, right Dearie?" She checked. I sighed. Not again.
"I guess, but-"
"Perfect! Now get changed out of your uniform and head over there!" Muffet interrupted yet again.
"Wha- right now?" I said, startled.
"Yes right now, dearie! I need that recipe, pronto!" Muffet rushed, pushing me towards the corner of the kitchen where there were two changing cubicles, before scampering back into the store front in her heels to attend to the customer that just rung the service bell. I sighed, before stepping into one of the small cubicles to get changed.
---
"Is this really necessary?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Yes!" Muffet screeched exasperatedly, before beginning on a rant.
"If people prefer his croissants to mine, that means I won't get anymore money, which means he will, then he will expand until Grillby's is literally outside our door! Then we'll be forced out onto the streets, where we'll have to use real spiders in my baking again! I won't have enough money to pay anyone, so I'll have to pay you in buttons! Buttons, Dearie, buttons!" She despaired, clinging to my red blouse. I looked up at the ceiling and huffed through my mask of fabric before looking back down at Muffet.
"Call me crazy, but I think you might be being a little over dramatic." I told her.
"Nonsense dearie! Now go! Go!" She insisted, straightening out my blouse, then shooing me away with her tiny hands.
"Where is it?!" I asked, panicked.
"Down Salt-Pepper Street, big diner, you can't miss it. Now go on!" She ordered, waving her arms about in a flurry. I rushed out of the glass door, brushing my hair out of my eyes as I went. I slung my bag into my motorbike's storage box and climbed on it. I put my helmet on with a click and then raced off faster than you can say 'crazy spider-lady'.
Luckily, because I used to cycle to work on a bicycle, I knew the streets along my route, and it just so happened that Salt-Pepper Street was one of the many that I passed. As I rode along Seamus Avenue, I was reminded of my old job. The one that had got me into so much trouble. It gave me chills to think how similar the mission I had been assigned was to my old line of work. I shook my head free of that thought. What Muffet was asking me to do was just a quick, one time thing. Scope out the place today, get the recipe tomorrow. I was sure Grillby will be more than reasonable, after all, a croissant recipe can't be that important.
Oh, how wrong I was.
'It'll be like taking candy from a baby.' I thought to myself. Not that I would ever do that, that's just mean. Unless the baby wasn't allowed to have candy, because it was too young...
I finally arrived at Grillby's. It looked nice. Friendly, even. I parked my bike in the car park situated by the side of the building, grabbed my bag, and headed inside. The thing that immediately caught my attention was the fire behind the bar. My eyes widened, and I almost yelled before realizing it was a fire monster. I was still getting used to all the different types of monsters. I approached the bar, taking a seat next to a grinning skeleton in a blue jacket, shorts and pink slippers who seemed to be in a deep conversation with a nervous looking, dinosaur-like yellow monster in a simple, white lab coat.
I was looking around the jubilant room when suddenly I noticed a bright light in my peripheral vision. I turned my head back to the bar to see the fire monster in front of me. The name tag pinned to his black, satin waistcoat read: 'Grillby'
"Hello." I greeted him with a smile.
