I opened my eyes and looked up to her. She looked down at me and nodded, telling me she seriously wanted to know. I still didn't answer. I didn't know where to start.
"Well? How did you meet him, Stef? What's he like? And how does Monte even know about him being a foster child? And why does she want to adopt him?" Lena asked curiously.
"Well," I began, "I met him when I was leaving the school after talking to Monte. He... Uhh... He ran out in front of my car-"
"HE WHAT?! Why would he do that?!" She practically yelled. "Did you hit him?" She asked quieter.
"No, Love. I slammed on the breaks and got out of the car. I asked him his name, but he wouldn't answer. I walked him into the school and to Monte's office. I asked her if he was a student there and she said yes. She said his name is James Stirling and he is the top of his class. He's in 8th grade..."
"James Stirling? He is top of his class. He was sent to the office for something minor the other day. I know exactly who you're talking about... But why? Why would he run out in front of your car?"
"Well... Monte got him to talk to us. James said that he was in a very bad foster home. He said they were beating him and yelling at him. He said that they held these really high expectations, that he was meeting, so they raised them higher. To the point where no one could meet them, just so they had a reason to beat him. He told us that he rarely got fed dinner. He told us he was just tired of it all and wanted it to stop."
"Oh no..." Lena trailed off.
"Lena," I choked out, "when I saw how broken he looked... He reminded me of Jack Downey. He looks almost exactly like him. When I looked in his eyes, I saw all of the fear and pain. I promised Monte I would help her get him."
"Okay, Stef." Lena said hugging me tighter as I cried again. "We will foster him until she gets her license."
"We will?" I asked hopefully as I immediately stopped crying.
"Yes, my love, we will."
