Chapter 16

Sophie

I left Alice at the kitchen table, staring at old photos and reminiscing. I walked up the stairs and into my bedroom. I dropped my bathrobe and got dressed in a pair of black skinny jeans, a lime green tank top, a grey, oversized sweater, and a pair of black flats with a little black bow on each one. I curled my hair and added a blue bow. I then did my make-up in the bathroom; purple eye shadow, mascara, and light pink shimmer lip gloss. I grabbed my backpack, shoved some things I had taken out of it and assignments I finished, and ran down the stairs. Alice was still sitting at the table, after twenty-five minutes. I kicked her with my foot and her chair almost toppled over. She looked up at me, confused.

"Ice, we've got school in twenty minutes! Get your ass moving!" She yelped, dropped her dishes in the sink and bolted upstairs. I rolled my eyes and packed the photos and blanket back in the box. I stood by the front door, my eyes watching my pink and white watch as the hand made a ticking noise, moving around the face. I heard thumping and Alice came flying down the stairs, brush in hand, hair flying everywhere, one backpack strap on her shoulder, the other one dangling, and a scrunched up pile up papers in her other hand. She didn't have make-up on, but I saw her make-up bag sticking out of her backpack zipper which was half undone. I smirked.

"You've got seven minutes, you know." She sighed in relief, turned to the hall mirror and tugged her brush through her knotty hair. When she was done, she pulled a elastic out of her pocket and pulled her hair up into a messy bun. She then swooped some blue eye shadow on and mascara, and turned to me.

She was wearing a loose tank top with a beach on the front, red high waisted shorts, teal Converse and a white wool cardigan. She zipped her backpack up, pulled it onto her shoulders and nodded. We went out the door, she locked it and we walked down the driveway towards my red Suzuki. I got in the drivers seat, she got in beside me and I started the ignition. I tossed my backpack in the back seat beside Alice's, and dropped my purse by my feet. I pulled out of the driveway and drove towards the school.

At school, Alice and I walked into the building. Kids were bustling around, getting to their classes, and thank goodness we weren't late. I checked my watch, we had a minute to spare. I waved to Alice and ran down the hall, slipping into a classroom and tiptoeing to my seat in the middle of the room. I got in my seat before the teacher turned around, and he didn't notice I was nearly late. I dropped my backpack and purse between my feet under the desk, neither of which I had had time to drop off at my locker. I clasped my hands on my desk and tuned into the lecture on whatever it is he was talking about.

I was walking towards the cafeteria, my backpack at my locker, my purse strap over my head, resting on my left shoulder, hitting the right side of my waist. Alice was beside me, Kelly beside her, and they were talking about some dance thing. Kelly also dances, but only for fun. Her main passion is piano. Today, Kelly was wearing a red and white plaid skirt that frilled out when she spun, a white blouse, red two-inch heels, sparkly dangly silver earrings and a matching bracelet.

"Hey, Soph, you're awfully quiet today. What's up?" Kelly ran over beside me, so I was in the middle. She linked her arm through mine and Alice did the same with my other arm.

"Oh, nothing. She's just thinking about a boy." Alice winked and I felt the heat rise to my cheeks.

"Ooh, really?! Is he cute? Do I know him? Does he go to our school? I need all the deats!" Kelly babbled.

My blush deepened as I searched for words. "Kelly, zip it so I can answer you and Alice, shut the hell up right now. Kell, his name is Adam," I hissed so no one could hear me. "He just moved in with his family next door. He's nice, you might know him, he goes to our school now that he's moved here, and I don't know if he's cute, maybe, probably not..." I trailed off awkwardly as we began filling our trays with food in the cafeteria line.

Kelly rolled her eyes as she spooned mashed potatoes into a bowl on her tray. "Alice, is he hot?"

Alice smirked. "Kells, he's so dang hot that if I wasn't dating Mitch I'd be all over him." Kelly nodded with approval and grabbed a banana. "And he likes Sophie." Alice winked.

I rolled my eyes as Kelly's face lit up. "Oh my gosh, no way! Soph-ieee! That's so awesome! You gotta introduce us." She states as we pay for our food and weave our way through the tables filled with kids chattering and laughing.

We sat down at our table and began to eat. Suddenly, Mitch appeared by Alice's side and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close to his side.

"Hey, babe," Mitch cooed sickeningly as he kissed Alice's head. She blushed. "Hey, Sophie. Kelly." He smiled at us before he began to eat his food on his own tray.

We ate mostly in silence for a few minutes, only a few random comments here and there, until Adam sat down beside me, dropping his backpack on the ground.

"Hey, guys." He greeted Alice, Mitch, and Kelly even though he didn't know her, and then smiled at me. "Hi, Sophie. How are you?"

"Hi, Adam. I'm good, thanks. How are you?" I replied awkwardly.

"I'm great." Adam ran a hand through his hair.

The rest of the day went by uneventful. By the time I was at home, sitting crossed legged on my bed with my phone, waiting for pizza to be delievered, Alice doing homework at the kitchen table, and I wondered why was I so awkward around Adam?

Is it because I like him?

I can't like him.

Can I?
