*Paige's POV*
After making a few more stops by Nathan's table refilling his drink and making small talk, he finally walked up to the counter with his check and paid. I gave him back his change and out of habit said, "Thanks for choosing Sal's, come back soon."
He grinned and shot me a slight wink as he put his wallet back in his pocket, "Trust me, I will," then he turned around and walked out.
"Did you get his number?" I jumped, startled and looked at Melissa and scowled at her for sneaking up on me like that.
I rolled my eyes, "What? No, why would I want his number?"
She scoffed as if it were obvious, "Because you like him, duh Paige."
I shook my head, "I don't even know him Mel, and even if I did, I don't want to date anyone right now," I realized I was telling myself that more than anything as I leaned on the counter, watched him walk past the window, and sighed, "It's too messy."
I looked over at her and realized she'd been watching me, "Look Paige, you always say that it's too messy, but the mess isn't so bad to deal with when you find the right person. And honestly who ever had a little fun without making a mess?" she shot me a cheeky grin and gathered up some dishes from a nearby table.
"Maybe you're right," I shrugged, "And you think that he is the right person huh?"
She shrugged, "You'll never know if you never try."
After the rest of my long shift, I finally bode farewell to Melissa and headed home, checking my phone during the short walk. I had one message from my brother, Alex, 'hey I'm staying the night with jake. I'll be home early tomorrow morning.' It looked like I'd have the night to myself.
The rest of my walk home was filled with thoughts of the pizza and Netflix I'd be enjoying tonight.
I always had to shower after a shift at the diner if I didn't want to smell like fries and burgers. As soon as I stepped out of the shower my phone started ringing, so I quickly dried my hands and saw that it was my best friend, Madison, and answered.
"Hey loser," she said immediately and I could tell she was smiling just from the tone of her voice.
"Hey," I laughed and held the phone a few inches away from my ear because of my soaking wet hair.
"Cancel your plans tonight, me and Jack are going to a concert and we have a couple of extra tickets. And you, my dear, are coming along."
"And what if I don't want to?"
"Did I ask?"
"You said two extra tickets, who all is going?" I put the phone on speaker and set it down on the bathroom counter.
"Me, Jack, you, and Jack's brother," she muttered the last part quietly so that I wouldn't hear.
"No. Madison, you are not setting me up again. Don't you remember the last time and how freaking great that turned out?"
I heard her laugh on the other end at the memory of the last disastrous blind date that she'd forced me to go on, "Well Jack and I will be there this time, plus Jack's brother is a really nice guy. It won't even be like a date or anything, just please come it'll be fun. And I miss you, you work too much and,-" I cut her off before she could continue her rambling.
"Fine, I'll go, but what should I wear?"
"Excellent, wear those holey jeans and a cute top, something cute and casual."
"This better be the best damn concert I've ever been to, I had a date with pizza and my TV planned."
"Trust me, this'll be more fun. We'll pick you up at six."
"I'll believe that for now. See you then."
"Bye, love you!" Madison hung up before I could answer.
I shook my head and started to get ready.
