In the story the central idea is that Perfection doesn't exist. the story is about someone who believes that the society that they live in is perfect because the society was built to be perfect, however, Cassia slowly finds out that the society isn't perfect. Cassia realizes that she doesn't want to live in a society where you're told who to love instead of falling in love with someone on your own. this proves that even though the society was built to have ruled out any problems and be perfect they ended up just taking away people's freedoms which is an imperfection. A literary element that supports this is conflict. in the story Cassia is conflicted about her feelings towards the Society. this kind of conflict is man vs self. Cassia was first conflicted as to whether or not she believed that the society could have made a mistake with her match when she sees Ky's face on the screen. She is later conflicted as to whether or not it's okay that the society restricts  people's abilities to fall in love with people on their own. Cassia realizes that she no longer believes in the society that she lives in, which leads into the conflict of man vs society or the social norms which is where the story leaves off.
