Drowning

She is drowning.

Her screams are muffled.
They dissolve into oblivion.
No one can hear her.
No one can see her.
She is in too deep.
All around her, darkness.
All around her, people float comfortably
in life boats.

She is drowning.

The ocean swallows her and fights for her
As she sinks further and further out of view.
No matter how hard she kicks,
No matter how steadfastly she struggles,
All is in vain.
She is running out of air.

She is drowning.

Those fairytales were never true.
Her prince won't come to her rescue
And pull her out of this nightmare.
Reality slowly sets in.
She feels death creeping up on her.

She is drowning.

She has been without oxygen for ages.
Above her, everyone she has ever loved is alive and well.
They don't see her.
Her father is in the biggest boat
With a strange woman
That she hates.
The only other person drowning too
Is her mother, far below her.

She is drowning.

If she did manage to brush her fingers
Against a life boat,
She would only be a nuisance,
A disturbance in the water,
Another burden for the boats to carry.
She gives up.
This fight is folly.
She inhales.
She inhales deeply, harshly, suddenly.
She wants to live.
She wants her fairytale ending.
But alas,

She is drowning.

Cold water stabs her lungs,
Cold water buries itself in her.
She wants to cough.
She wants help.
She wants someone to reach down into the depths
And grasp her hand and pull her out
And mend her back to good health.
But it is too late.

She is dead.

She belongs to the ocean now.
Water envelopes her
And embraces her
And gently guides her down to
The ocean floor.
He loves her, he fought for her.
He asks her to stay with him forever,
And she has no choice but to accept his request.
She is left there,
Loved only by the mighty ocean,
As the people in life boats
Live on in ignorance.
