She stood at the window, gazing out at the grey city. The muffled sound of the city echoing throughout the apartment. She held a cup of hot tea in her delicate hands. Her hair vibrant in the light. As she brought the mug to her lips, she felt a pair of arms wrap around her waist and gently resting on her small bump.
" 'Morning Thomas." She said turning to face him. He smiled before pecking her on the lips.
" 'Morning Nina" He replied is voice thick and raspy. He looked down between them at the obvious bump on Nina's stomach. "And good morning to you too little guy" He added cheerfully.
"Just four months and you can tell him in person" Nina said grinning. Thomas brought his hand up to her face gently tucking the loose strands of wavy hair behind her ear, all the while looking into her eyes.
"I wonder whose eyes he'll have" he thought aloud. Nina smiled warmly,
"Maybe he'll have your eyes and my smile."
"And maybe a dimple beneath his chin." Thomas added. Nina cupped Thomas's jaw with her hands.
" If he looks anything like you, he'll be perfect." Thomas rolled his eyes playfully in reply,
"He'll be perfect no matter what! Now come on, lets eat breakfast." Thomas wrapped an arm around her shoulders and led her to the kitchen.
Nina sat at the table, Her eyes focused on an "Early Parenting" book while Thomas fixed breakfast in the kitchen. Nina all of a sudden, looked up from her page, she felt strange. A weird feeling in the pit of her stomach that she couldn't explain. Like something bad was about to happen. The sound of Thomas entering the room knocked her out of her daze. He was holding two plates in his hands. He set one in front of her and the other one in the seat next to her. The plates where decorated with a delicious looking omlette, two slices of toast and some crispy golden-brown bacon. The delightful aroma of the food filled her nostrils. Though the food looked absolutely wonderful, she had no appetite.
Nina shuffled the food around her plate, eating only tiny forkfuls of food at a time. Thomas looked up from his paper and noticed she hadn't eaten much. He gave her a concerned look.
"Babe?" He questioned. Nina didn't respond. "Nina is everything alright?" He asked again hoping to get a response.
"Yeah, I'm fine" She replied blankly,
"Are you sure? You look sick." He said starting to get up from his seat and making his way towards her.
"It's nothing."
"You sure?" He asked hesitantly. Nina stood up to meet his gaze.
"Yeah," She said giving a weak smile "I'm sure." Thomas exhaled softly and took a step towards her, raising his hand to rest on her cheek.
"Promise?" he asked softly. Nina brought her delicate hand to meet his.
"I Promise." She said looking into his emerald eyes, even though she knew in her gut that something was going to happen.
"TOM! 'YOU READY TO GO?" Nina called from the front entrance of the apartment. Thomas came around the corner while putting his coat on. He looked at her and smiled cheekily.
"Why aren't you ready yet" He asked jokingly. Nina rolled her eyes and hit him with her purse playfully. Thomas took her hand and with that, they left the apartment and began to make their way down the stairs.
Two flights down, Nina stopped in her tracks. She let go of Tom's hand and patted her pockets. She let out n exasperated sigh.
"Dammit" She muttered, Thomas turned to face her.
"Whats is it love?"
"My phone, I forgot it upstairs." She said turning to go back up the stairs.
"No it's ok babe, i'll get it." Thomas suggested grabbing her wrist. Nina turned to face him.
Thomas, I'm pregnant not crippled, I can go get my phone" Nina said giggling softly. Thomas smiled and let go of her wrist.
"Alright, I'll wait for you here then." He kissed her cheek softly. "Now go on! We're gonna' be late!" Nina turned and begun walking back up the stairs.
"I GOT IT!" Nina shouted making her way down the stairs towards him. Thomas looked up only in time to see his whole life shatter before him. Nina's foot slipped on one of the stairs. As if in slow motion, her fragile body tumbled down the hard flight of stairs causing her to hit her head and land on to her vulnerable stomach.
Thomas's jaw dropped, "NINA!" he screamed. His eyes immediately beginning to fill with tears. He couldn't believe what he just witnessed before him. He quickly made his way to her side falling to his knees. By this point, tears where streaming down his face. He turned her on her back to reveal her blood ridden face. Thomas hurried to find a pulse. When his shaky fingers met the steady pace of her heartbeat, he sighed with relief and called the ambulance, praying they would arrive shortly.
At the hospital, Thomas struggled to keep up with the pace of the gurney. The gurney sped ahead of him disappearing behind a large set of doors.
"Sir, i'm afraid this is as far as you may go." A nurse said blocking his path.
"No, I have to see h-"
"Sir i can assure you she is fine and in good hands." the nurse interrupted for the second time.
"What about my son?" Thomas asked beginning to get annoyed. The nurse paused before responding.
"She took a hard fall on her abdomen..." Thomas clenched his fists into a ball. "We will do everything we can to-" The nurses sentence was abruptly interrupted by the violent action of Thomas's fist colliding int the wall, shattering a photo of a white lilac. His rage quickly turned into despair as he collapsed to his knees, eyes once again filling with tears.
"I have to see them" He muttered quietly. "I have to."
Hours Passed
Thomas walked into the recovery room to find Nina in her bed, looking out the window at the night sky. The room was ridden with silence.
Her delicate right arm rested at the pit of her flat stomach. She turned her head to face Thomas. When their eyes met, they both began to cry. Thomas walked over to the chair by the bed, sitting down and taking her bandaged left hand into his gently stroking hers with his thumb.
"He's gone." Nina muttered, her voice gravely and lifeless. The silent room was interrupted by only the sounds of whimpers and cries that went ongoing throughout the most painful night either of them had ever lived.
She stood at the window, her red, puffy eyes gazing out at the city beyond. Her hair dull and strait, her face hollow and varying in shades of grey and white. Her thin figure was met by two shaky arms wrapping around her waist. Thomas rested his head on her shoulder, his eyes puffy and red not unlike hers. His face also hollow and pale. They stood there at the window in silence, staring at the infinitely rainy city. Thomas's shaky voice broke the silence.
" My mother told me that-that the reason 'it' happened was because he was needed up there" He said nudging his head towards the dark fluffy clouds in the sky outside. Nina whimpered softly and stopped only to mutter and almost inaudible.
"Why?"
