Ansley woke up in the hospital and found Tammy's daughter Lizza by her side. She asked Lizza what had happened. Lizza told Ansley that a deer had jumped in front of the car causing her to swerve and hit a side rail and flipped and how Ansley had suffered a concussion and how they were in the hospital in town. Ansley asked Lizza where Tammy was. Lizza just stared straight ahead at the wall and very quietly said, "She hit her head and died instantly." She said it almost like a whisper. Lizza didn't shed a tear. She didn't show any sign of sadness. But Ansley had just guessed that she was in shock or denial or something like that.
Ansley knew from that moment that Lizza was now going to have to be living with her or she was going to be put in a foster home.
