Kayla sighed as she finished packing up the last of her clothes, her eyes gliding around the room once more longingly. Her almond shaped, emerald green eyes filled with tears as a strand of her silky brunette hair fell in her face. The bright sun-kissed walls were now bare of anything reminiscent of Kayla and the bed looked like any of the other beds in the guest rooms.

The large french doors leading to the balcony that overlooked the lush garden were wide open, letting in the cool summer breeze from the bay. So many memories were here...Kayla bit back tears, determined not to cry. Ever since her little sister had been kidnapped and then found days later dead on the side of the road, her Mom and Dad were determined to send her off somewhere to "learn to protect herself."

For days after Kayla first heard the news, she took any free moment she had to speak with her parents on the matter. "But I'm not going anywhere dangerous..." Kayla pleaded relentlessly until her voice cracked and all she could do was sob when the matter was brought up. . "All I want is to find a husband that will be good to me and keep me safe!" Tears didn't work with her Mom and anger didn't get through to her Dad.

Now Kayla was being shipped out to an Academy that would "benefit her greatly."

"It will be good for you, Pumpkin. It will keep you safe."

Dad's words echoed in Kayla's head as she closed her suitcase and grabbed her small travel bag, only carrying a small red leather bound journal in her left hand. Pushing the hair that had fallen in her eyes behind her ear, Kayla walked out of her old room and closed the door behind her. The comforting and familiar life here at the Rareland's manor was over now and soon Kayla would be on a train to the Academy far away from here.

"Goodbye my home. I am no longer yours to protect anymore." Kayla's voice was soft, barely above a whisper as she trailed her hands down the banister and made her way to the front door where a coach awaited.
