"Couldn't have been more specific?" Melissa said jokingly as I left the room. She and Tabby were waiting outside of class for me, both giggling and recalling the moment. The blush was still evident in my face, and I absolutely hated the feeling of it. What else was I supposed to do? He just would kept touching me, and who knows where the next spot would have been.
"Shut up," I replied, looking away, hoping for my long, dark hair to cover my face. Tabby smiled, and Melissa let out another giggle. I pushed through them to keep on walking forward, but I heard them follow me quickly to catch up. Tabby even grabbed my arm to make me stop.
"What's the matter, Kat? You seem a little... off," she remarked. I rolled my eyes and pulled away from her grasp, scoffing.
"I've just been slapped on the butt by the school jerk, and you think I seem a little off?" Tabby shrugged, clearly not knowing how to respond. We just stared at each other, with Melissa watching us intently. My best friend of five years did not know what to say to make me feel better. Boy, this day kept getting better. Once again, I began walking towards my locker, but this time neither Melissa or Tabby followed me. I reached my locker only to find Jack leaning against a nearby locker and half of mine. I stopped and cleared my throat to get his attention, giving him my cutest smile when he turned around to face me.
"Excuse me," I whispered gently. He stepped back a bit and said bye to his friend, only to give his attention back to me. My heart pounded, and I was about to faint.
"Hey, um... Kelly, right?"
"Uh... actually, it's Katherine, but everyone calls me Kat," I replied, still smiling. He grinned, mumbling, "Right, right... hey, haha, some stunt back there, right?" I shot him a confused look but gently nodded, openeing my locker to the messy clutter I had in there. I kept it partially open enough for me to put stuff in, but not enough for him to look in.
"Yeah, well Jake always likes to mess around, ya know?" he said, his grin fading.
"Yes, James sure is the troublemaker and the perfect bad boy," I replied, emphasizing Jake's real name. Jack shrugged, closed his eyes, and pointed to himself. "Where do you think he learned it from?" he asked, obviously implying himself. I quietly whispered, "I don't know. Maybe his dad." I did not want to accuse Jack of Jake's terribleness. Jack only chuckled.
"Yeah, don't worry. I'm just messing with you," he gave me a small pat on my arm. I blushed and looked back down into my locker, placing my binder in there. I couldn't believe it. I was having a conversation with Jack Stunnington! No, his last name isn't really Stunnington, it's Shubbington, but hey, close enough. I think Stunnington works a lot better for him.
"Yeah," I giggled nervously. Why was I so awkward around him? At least, he didn't seem to mind. He gave me one of his great smiles. Of course, our moment had to be ruined by none other than the infamous Jake Marks. He gave a great slap to Jack's back as he approached us, hooting and howling, "My man!" as doing so before his gaze was set on me. When Jack smiled, it was adorable, but when Jake smiled, he appeared to be up to something. He gave Jack one more pat on the back before spreading his hands out.
"My girl!" he hollered at me. I slammed my locker shut.
"Come back for some more?" he continued as he tried to slap my butt again. As he leaned down towards my ass, I gave him a firm slap across his face. He shot back up, surprised.
"Whoa..." he said, "Good one, Kat." He gave me another smile. I was surprised he knew my name. He glanced at Jack and said to him, "Dude, I'll see you at practice, aight? Don't forget this time. See ya, man." They touched knuckles. Jake turned his attention to me again. "And I'll see ya later too, Kat." With that, he clicked his tongue and winked at me. He left. I shook my head to Jack. Of course, Jake ruined our moment. Sadly, Jack had to go too.
"I guess I'll see you around then?" he asked me.
"Yeah," I said for the third time, grinning.
"Cool. Ok, bye... Pat?" he said, with a questioning look. It's as if he wasn't even paying attention. "Kat," I corrected him, still smiling. Jack nodded, muttering, "Right, right..." and walking off. I began to walk in the opposite direction until I was stopped by Tabby and Melissa.
"Whoa... were you just talking to Mr. Stunnington back there?" Melissa asked, elbowing me. Tabby giggled. I kept smiling and looked down. "Yeah," I replied, for God knows what time. I needed to better my speech skills. "Until Mr. "Bun"nington had to come and intterupt us," I added. Melissa looked confused. "Jake?" she asked. I nodded. Tabby rolled her eyes and shook her head. I was slightly disappointed that I didn't get to talk to Jack for a while longer. But Tabby reassured me.
"Don't worry. He said he'll see you around, right?"
"You were eavesdropping, weren't you?" I yelled at her, laughing. Tabby shrugged and grinned, elbowing me again "What are best friends for?" she asked rhetorically. I loved her. She was great. We were almost near Melissa's locker when Tabby added, "Well, Jake isn't that bad of a guy..." We stared at her. After a couple of seconds, we burst out laughing.
"As if!" I said a bit too loudly, gaining a disapproving look from a nearby teacher. I would never have even thought of being with Jake in a million years. I didn't want a guy like him. "Uh... if you compare him to Tristan "Stalker" Walker," Melissa added. We all shuddered. Tristan was probably the creepiest guy in the school. He was gross, popped his zits in class, ate what he found on the floor, you know, the usual things the weird kids do... He got his name from the time he followed Lizzy into the girls' locker room. One could say it was an honest mistake... but he attacked, took her shoe, and ran for it.
Jake wasn't nearly as bad as that. Still, I could never see myself with such an insensitive jerk. The bell rang in the middle of my thoughts and in the middle of something Melissa was saying to me that I wasn't paying attention to. Tabby swore under her breath and dashed off, mumbling a quick good-bye. We were near my class, when Melissa was about to leave. "Don't forget what I told you," she said.
I hadn't been paying attention to her so I only nodded and replied with, "I won't." She nodded and rushed to her next class. The teacher was upset when I walked in late and gave me a tardy. I simply took a seat and groaned. I had just remembered what class I had next. Co-ed P.E. And guess who I had in that class...
