The picture is "Ben"....or is it?...
By Sunrise I was a little under halfway to Godric in Washington. I stopped off at a vampire-friendly motel; it had black out curtains and True Blood in the mini bar, it wasn't paradise but it's better than some places I've stayed over the years. I showered and changed and slept through the day; I couldn't completely fall asleep because the paranoia of being hunted by my own would-be child had set in. I'd wake up every few hours and check that everything was where I had left it; the particularity placed hair brush on the dresser or the chair with a book lightly balanced on top of it near the door, which could knock over if anyone came in when I was asleep; seeing that everything was as it was I would climb back into the bed then fall back into my half-arsed slumber.
When night came around I checked out and got straight back on the road, my driving behaviour was the same as the night before - the radio was on for back ground noise, and I was thinking as I drove, trying not to draw any attention to myself. I had at least the rest of tonight to drive and maybe a little longer and I'm not going to risk driving in the day light, or even the early hours; so I guess I'm going to be late for dinner after all. I chuckled to myself and then texted Godric letting him know about my miscalculation. He didn't respond but I didn't expect him to, he always seems to be busy.
The daylight alarm went off on my phone, pulling me out of my weak slumber; I looked up the nearest vampire-motel and pulled off the highway at the next exist. The pattern of behaviour of my last night in a motel repeated itself, but the paranoia seemed to decrease the closer I got to Washington, knowing I had Godric and all his kin as a backup was subconsciously rea assuring to me. But what changed tonight was my sleep, it trapped me in a deep slumber and I dreamed, this wasn't unusual, however my dreams were typically memories that I had long forgotten, not all of them good but still things I had been through or seen in my existence; that wasn't the case this time, my dream was more like video threat from my progeny, some of our mental links had been reconnected after meeting one of my "granddaughters" would be a safe bet... because blood does call out to blood I guess.
Her face appeared in my mind the second I relaxed into sleep, she said nothing to begin with so I studied her face, she looked the same as she always had; so innocent and so sweet, a childish hope in her eyes. But I knew that was all an illusion, being the one who had made her the way she is - insane, cruel and unstable. She was a wolf in sheep's clothing; she was everything her family had raised her to be as a mask to lure people in and then everything I had made her when she dropped that mask, and became her true self. When she finally made a sound she just laughed. My progeny sounded so much like her own vampire-daughter when she had been in Eric's basement, tortured, pained and humourless but then it was confident, daring and challenging, showing just how far off the rails she had gone. She stopped laughing abruptly and said in a threatening whisper: "One day my dear mother... we well be reunited and I will give you choice and either way you choose I will win" she chuckled to herself "and it is inevitable that you will play my game and that I will win... I'll see you and all your kin someday... not as soon as planned but sooner than you want...goodbye my dear mother Athena"
As she spoke my name I shot up awake. I could feel the adrenaline rushing through my body, the fear, of her, or for my family I wasn't sure all I knew is that I never wanted to feel that scared again. As I climbed out of the bed there was a knock on the door
"Who is it?" I shouted through the door not wanting to open it and feel the burning rays of the sun which would only add to the adrenaline rushing through my veins and the fear that lingered in the back of my mind.
"I work at the motel...it's 6:30 and pitch black out here...There's a message for you... a, a letter" The slightly timid voice of the employee came through the door. I opened the door and there stood a young vampire, maybe 20 years old, turned recently, brown hair, dark green eyes and a pale face. He held out a note to me, his hand tremored ever so slightly, but he seemed to realise and corrected this, holding it firm and still
"Here you go miss" I accepted it slowly watching the scared child of a vampire that stood before me
"thank you...who is your maker? You seem familiar to me" I said sensing I knew whomever it was but not being able to place him or her
"Santina Rossi, miss" I nodded, I should have known by the décor, early 19th century Italy, expensive paintings on the walls, all some of her favourites, some she had commissioned herself way back then
"Tell her that Scarlett Compton is going to see her husband and I'll be with him if she ever needs anything" He nodded hopefully remembering my name and the whole message. He stepped back to walk away
"and kid..." he turned around slightly, half facing me with a questioning look on his face.
"Try to look less scared of other vampires, you may be young but you are one of us, and you're from a strong blood line and faith in that" He seemed to stand up straighter and nodded respectfully before taking off at a speed towards the main body of the motel.
