I couldn't catch my breath.  Somehow the smoke was still miles out from the pack house.
One thought runs through my head as I hear a piercing howl:

Run

Run run run

Their pounding paws in the ground.  My wolf's once gray and white fur caked in smoke and dirt, making me look like a rouge.

Fast run faster

My animal instincts kicking in, my head clouded by adrenaline.  Bursting through a think curtain of trees that cut open my skin leaving my with small cuts all over.

I slowly stop, or collapse on the bank of a small river, to tired to move any closer.  Wishing it could just magically float into my mouth, hope, something I lost long ago.

My breathing is labored, no longer pants but ghostly gasps.  No longer being able to hear the paws I slowly relax.  Why was I running? Why do I try to stay?

The soft rustling of leaves fills my ears, but even that is slowly fading.

I slowly close my eyes, now I can't hear anything.  They always say your hearing is the last to go.

Because even after the terrified feeling comes the acceptance that you won't make it, and I'm accepting that.

I guess it's cruel really, mother natural wants you to be able to hear the world even in your last few seconds.

With one last slow labored breath I stop hearing, losing my will, I'm now at peace.  My body starts numbly shaking, and it feels as if I'm floating, but it's too late for me now.

They should know that.......
