"Does it feel natural?" Natural... what was the meaning of his question? "Being around them... does it feel as it once had?" I sigh deeply as my head hangs low. "No, it doesn't. We used to be so close just because and now... we aren't." What seemed to be a start of a good day turned sour as words were exchanged. "At least they still talk to you." I knew that I was lucky; most of them do not want to be near us. "Very displeasing... Do you want to see them today?" I asked as I knew his answer. "No, what's the point? They don't want to see me." I closed my eyes only to change my breathing technique. "Embre can we go hunting today?" Hunting... I haven't hunted in a month; I have been too preoccupied with babysitting. "Yeah, I am okay with that."
The typical arrow was shot; the gleam of the liquid filled heart was warm as I set it safely in my bag. Something felt off though, it felt as if an unpleasant event was going to take place. "Chase!" I screamed as I turned to him. Emotions were surfacing and my worry for his safety was shown. "What's wrong?" Nonchalantly Chase spoke while drawing his bow. "Don't shoot that arrow; if you do I will never forgive you!" I screamed, with my words in the open he set his bowstring back in place. "Why can't I shoot it? Did you get the feeling as well? This could be my chance and you want me to stop?"
As I ran towards him, tears filled my eyes. "Please don't shoot. You said you wouldn't leave me; you need to keep your promise. Do you want to lie like Mason; do you want to do that to me again?" I shouted as I ran into his chest, tears were pouring down my face onto his shirt and I did not stop. "Don't leave me please." I screamed as my voice cracked. Quickly and quietly he placed his hand on the back of my head and held me close. "I won't shoot it, just don't cry." Whispering he stroked my head, I was calmed yet my heart was still racing. Why had I done this...? Why couldn't I have just let Chase go? "Very displeasing..." My usual statement was repeated as it expressed my inner thoughts.
"Embre, please just give me a chance... I can't promise that I am not going anywhere but I can say that I do not want to. I want to make sure that you are with me, I love you Embrena. Please don't keep denying me." The longer that one denies their feelings for another the harder they fall for the one. "Chase... I..." My response was barely visible, how do I respond? I did not understand my feelings so why should I tell him when I hadn't even known?
Quickly Chase takes his own ring off of his swollen finger and sets it in his pocket. "Take off your ring please." He whispers, normal humans then stare at him as if he had appeared out of nowhere. I do as I was told and slide my thin black ring off, slowly the all at once I appear from nowhere. Many people were astonished by my presence and I smile. "Embre, please promise me that you will try." Chase then shouts as a thick silver ring was placed on my thin finger. Try... What had he meant? As my gaze widens, I notice the crowd of normal people surrounding us. He was not going to go into detail because of them.
"This is called a promise ring, it is meant to promise for marriage but for us... it will mean trying. So will you try, for me?" Try to live was my first thought, try to love is my second, and try to care was my third thought. "I will try." I whisper and the crowd gasps. Why were they gasping? Once the crowd disappears I speak freely. "We need to find more people like us; we need to answer some unanswered questions." Chase then nods as if he agreed with me and stands. His arms soon wrap around my body and his chest felt as if it clenched. "Thank you, for not letting me die." Die... even the word sent a shiver down my spine. How is it known that cupids die?
Walking through the damp park in our civilian forms, we spoke calmly. The two of us reached a playground with many children laughing. Casually I sit on one of the two red swings and rock back and forth, Chase then followed. "Where do we start looking?" I ask as I face him in the sunlight. "We need to find cupids that have 'lived' longer than you." I nod and smile, this was not going to be a simple task. Soon day turned to evening and the sun began to set, the two of us still rocked on the swings blissfully laughing. "It is getting late and we still need to see our families." The both of us walk towards my old home only to gain a suspicious feeling.
