"Shin... Shin wake up!" my mom whispered then shouted at me. I jerked up startled at her shouting. "Happy Birthday!"

I got my eyeglasses at my bedside table and looked at her, she's holding a cake and my older brother is holding the balloons, still sleepy. I also noticed the balloons in my room. I smiled and hugged her and kissed her on the cheek and repeated the pleasant gesture to my brother. "Thank you mom. Thank you, Raven."

I am Shin, just turned 22 years old this day. I just graduated theater arts last month. My dad died when I was 12 years old, I don't know how it happened but when I woke up that time, I hear my mom sobbing and crying holding the lifeless body of my father in their bed. My mom never dated after the passing of my father, I don't know why, but when I asked her she just said "There will only be one love of my life and that will never change", from there on, I didn't press the matters at hand ,if my mom is happy with her decisions, then all will be fine.

"Now come on and get ready I have another surprise for you." she left directly after saying that. I then did my morning routine and I'm wearing my jeans and an oversized T-shirt.

I went to the kitchen and ate my breakfast. "So what's my surprise?"

"you'll have to wait" I raised one eyebrow at her, all of my curiosity increasing at her choice of words.

"My baby sis is old now" Raven smirked at me his mouth full with pancakes."Oh shut up..."

A knock at the front door sent my mom smiling, "Stay here, both of you" she told us.

'Hmmmm... I wonder if she changed her mind and it's her new boyfriend at the front door' I sat myself comfortably waiting for my mom and the visitor. I hear whispering at the door, my mom's voice and a deep silky baritone of the unknown man.

"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Bithday to you..." someone is singing, shocked, I turned around and my eyes widened at the surprising visitor, "I-I... Thank you" I smiled and ran to hug him tightly. I looked at my mom and she is smiling gently at me...too gentle, she is plotting something. Alan and I are best friends since childhood, but my mom decided that we move to North Carolina after the death of my father and we lived here ever since.

"I missed you so much" I began to sob and cry harder in his shoulders. "shhh...I missed you too." Alan rubbed soothing circles at my back. My brother is patting the back of Alan obviously telling us that he, too, missed him.
