Three...Two...One...
Darkness
My heart skipped a beat as the lights flickered off, on, off, on, and then out.
"It's here," I heard myself whisper.
It had been three months since The Plague had started to spread. In just about two in a half months, The Plague had managed to completely wipe out most of the human race. Very few of us remained.
It was hard to be me. No, I'm not just saying that because I'm a moody fourteen year old. I'm saying it because it is, in fact, hard to be me. The Plague had killed my whole family while I was away on a school trip. That is when it all started.
I wasn't always alone, I did have a friend; Amelia, whom was a classmate of mine in the school trip, yet with her family passing due to the illness. But somehow, The Plague had got her, too.
The Plague isn't any ordinary sickness. It spreads through everything—I mean everything. Air, food, clothing, bodily fluids, and blood....
The Plague infected only humans, but once you were exposed to it, you will die. There is no cure for The Plague, having most of the doctors dead and The Plague running around doesn't help much either.
As I sat there on the cold wood floor of my attic, I thought of life before this. I was an average teen girl with pretty average intelligence. I wasn't particularly good at anything. I had average friends, average classes, and an average family....
.....except for my uncle Krone. Krone, being well above average in everything, used his above average knowledge to his advantage to gain power. He, however, was hated by millions. He was the first to be hit by The Plague.
I escaped my thoughts, and checked my clock radio that lied next to the heap of blankets and clothes I called a bed. It read 12:05 AM. I grabbed the piece of chalk from the floor and marked my wall.
"Day forty five." I said calmly to myself. I was tired, but I dare not sleep until light arrived. The Plague can get me while it's dark.
The thing about The Plague is that it doesnt just kill people, it takes over them.. transforms them in a way. Before they die, they have from the time the sun sets to when the sun rises to kill as many people as they can. That's why I'm locked up in my attic.
Actually—I wouldn't call it an attic. It was sort of a... master bedroom. It had one bedroom and a full bathroom off to the side. But, it was the third floor extra bedroom in my house.
What it didn't have, was a kitchen. I has one mini fridge and a few plug in skillet burners and a lifetime supply of junk foods.
The Plague went the shop owners and employees—So, naturally, people raided stores and gas stations for food. I had run to the 7-11 that was about ten minutes from my house to get food. They had Ramen, Cup O Noodle, Hostess doughnuts, and all kinds of potato chips. I also grabbed bananas and apples. Therefore, I'm not a complete junkie yet.
I reached for a soda. I was really tired and I needed energy. Caffeine...Anything.
I took a sip and sprawled out on my lumpy bed and sighed. I knew things would never be back to the way they were, but I hope I could just help mend the reality I was used to living in.
I started to hum an old tune—I actually wasn't half bad at singing. I loved to sing; I was musically inclined in a way. Soon my hums turned to words and l was belting out the words to Should I Stay Or Should I Go by The Clash. I was up and dancing, making unwanted noise. I bumped into the wall where my light switch was and I watched as my lights flickered on and stayed that way. I fell back down onto my bed after my karaoke session, feeling elated and awake.
One...two...three knocks on the door.
