Sirius walked downstairs to find Ariana already waiting for him.
"You're up early." He commented as they waited for James.

"I am guessing you found your prongs then." She said. He nodded.

"Yeah, I found James." He said. She nodded and they stood in silence for a bit.

"Can I ask you a question?" He asked her suddenly. She looked surprise, but nodded.

"If you want to." She agreed.

"What was it like? Being trapped like you were?" She sighed at his question and sat down on the arm of the sofa.

"We were held in a dungeon, tortured and abandoned. They wanted information, information we couldn't give. He's now gathering followers. The dark lord I mean. He is powerful and people follow him, what they were going to do with us, I do not know. But I escaped before I found out." She told him. Her story made little sense, but he seemed to understand.

"Yes, I know." He muttered softly. She smiled at him and they both jumped as James bounded down the stairs.

"Oh good! You're both here!" He said enthusiastically.

"We are." Ariana confirmed. James put and arm around each of them and they exited the common room together.

"Ok, this prank is simple, we charm the food to give to the Slytherins at breakfast. We have to hurry." James told them, he also told Ariana the charm. She nodded and then frowned.

"Why Slytherins?" She asked. James shrugged.

"They are the enemy." He told her. She nodded and got to work, the house elves were only too eager to help. It took them half an hour, but they had finally finished. Sirius and James knew that the time they could have wasted sleeping would be easily made back, by seeing the prank work.

"What now?" Ariana asked. There was still an hour until breakfast.

"How about we teach you how to play chess?" Sirius suggested, grinning at James. James grinned back and nodded.

"We should." He said. Ariana considered this as they walked back from the kitchens to the common room.

"What is chess?" She finally asked. Both boys looked shocked for a moment and then laughed.

"Sorry, we forgot you might not know. It's a game." James explained apologetically.

"OK." She agreed, she was up for trying new things, and chess sounded like it might be fun.

Remus walked downstairs to find James, Sirius and Ariana playing a game of chess. But it wasn't the normal kind a muggle would expect to see. It was wizards chess and that brought the game to a whole new level. He sat down beside the girl, who was playing against both James and Sirius, who were working as a team. He was amused to see that she was beating them at it.

"What are you doing?" He asked, although it was pretty obvious what they were doing. He made James jump. The boy had been trying to pick a move that would help him and Sirius claw back the game, but as yet he had been unsuccessful.

"Playing chess." Ariana answered as it was clear that neither of the other two would. She then smiled smugly. "I am winning."

Remus laughed. He knew that her opponents hated being beaten.

"Is this your first time playing?" He asked her. She nodded enthusiastically.

"Yes! I did not win the first game we played, but I'm winning this one." Remus couldn't help but laugh a second time. James made a move and visibly relaxed. Ariana also made a move and his face fell.

"What do I sat now?" She asked Remus who was watching the board with amusement.

"Checkmate." He said, smiling at Sirius and James' reactions.

Ariana nodded and then grinned a smug smile. "I won." She said after realising what their disappointed faces meantm

"We'd better go, or we'll be late to breakfast." He said, standing up and picking up his bag. Ariana, James and Sirius did the same and the four left for breakfast. Not bothering to wait for Peter to come down the stairs.

When the small group entered the great hall, Sirius and James were still marvelling at their spectacular defeat. The conversation stopped dead as soon as James saw the love of his life. Lily Evans.

"Evans!" He exclaimed as they sat down opposite her and Marlene. Lily sighed and glared at him.

"What do you want Potter?" She asked.

"Go out with me?" He questioned. She shook her head.

"For hopefully the last time, no!" She answered. James sighed, his shoulders slumped and for a moment he looked defeated. As soon as the look had come, it was gone and he was as happy as he had been before.

"Is this normal occurrence?"Ariana asked Remus, who was sat next to her, drinking tea.

"More then three times a day now." He answered after taking a long, dramatic sip of tea. She laughed at his tea-drinking and drained the rest of her pumpkin juice.

"How do you drink that this early in the morning?" He asked her. She shrugged.

"I like it."

"Miss... Dumbledore." Professor McGonagall appeared behind them. Ariana looked around at her in confusion.

"That is me, right?" She asked. The professor nodded and gave the girl her timetable. The girl thanked the teacher, who walked off. Remus looked over her shoulder at the timetable.

"We both have potions first." He pointed out.

"We have a what?"
