Be kind, for everyone you know is facing a great battle
CHAPTER ONE
I CURSED IN FRENCH AS FRESHLY MADE HOT COFFEE SPILLED ONTO MY HANDS. My hands shook as the hot liquid burned my hands. I squeaked and hastily set the cup down. I rubbed my hand and turned around face to face with Louis Montier, my boss.
"That's the fourth time this week Garnier!" his gruff voice shouted. He ran a hand through his almost nonexistent gray hair in anger. I put my hands behind my back.
"I-I tripped Monseir Montier," I squeaked. Louis put his face next to mine and I smelt his horrible cologne burning my nostrils. I didn't dare meet his cold blue eyes. He considered eye contact a sign of disrespect.
"Do you like working here Garnier?" Louis shouted in my face, his saliva flying all over my face. I nodded fiercely.
"Yes monseir," I whispered. Louis smiled slightly and pull away from me. I slowly wiped to saliva off my face. Louis grabbed my arm and I held my breath counting the seconds that passed, wishing that he would let me go.
"Don't let it happen again," Louis threatened, his cold eyes serious. I gulped and forced a smile.
"I won't monseir," I say trying to sound confident. I winced as he patted my head and walked away. I stuck my tongue out at his back and turned around.
"Oh! Monseir! Am I dismissed?" I asked hopefully. I need to get back home. I need to get to mom and Sophie, especially Sophie. Nobody that young should have to face mom alone. Though I was younger.
"Yes Garnier, but you had better be here ready to work as soon as I buzz you!" Louis exclaimed. I hid a smile and fought down the excitement building up inside my belly. I began taking off my apron and name tag that reads: Welcome to Le Café de la Banquet! My name is Olivie Garnier. I learned to despise that name tag. It's the mark of slaves!
"Of course monseir!" I slurred and rushed out the door bumping into people trying to get in. I leaned against the window display and sighed happily. I have been in there since four this morning. It's now noon. Before Louis could change his mind, I dashed across the street and out of view of the coffee shop.
My name is Olivie Garnier and I'm seventeen years old. I live with my poor mother and thirteen year old sister Sophie. I pulled loose my long blonde hair and shook it out letting it fall lazily on my shoulders. I felt a pull on my dirty jeans and looked down. There stood Aux, my dad's old Android 6.3. He left Aux behind, along with the rest of us. I favored Aux and took him as my own. Aux was small --only coming up to the middle of my shins and I'm 5'1"--and circular. He had tiny metal arms; his fingers can fit in keyholes. On the back of his head --he was only two circles, his head smaller than his body--was the words: A6.3I54 in large black print.
"How was work Olivie?" Aux asked. I gave him a small smile.
"As unpleasant as ever," I answered trying to keep my smile. I hated to see Aux upset, even if he isn't supposed to have feelings. He isn't like other Androids though, he has a lot of emotions. Aux tilted his head.
"It will get better Mademoiselle Garnier," Aux said confidently. He was way too confident and I rolled my eyes but couldn't help myself from smiling.
"Call me Olivie, Aux. I don't like any of that mademoiselle merde!" I exclaimed. Aux gasped.
"Watch your language mademoi--er--Olivie! And that's what Monseir Enzo told me to call you!" Aux exclaimed. I froze at the sound of my father's name. Enzo Garnier, the brilliant inventor who created the Androids. The man who won seven awards in three years. The man who left his pregnant wife and four year old daughter for money. I glared at Aux.
