I asked my mom one morning, "Mom, For my birthday, can you buy me a mermaid?"
She answered a firm, "No."
"Why not?" I asked.
At that moment, she turned to face me. "Because, they're not real."
"Yes, they are." I said back.
"No, they're not."
"Yes, they are!" I screamed.
She came over to me and slapped me. "You are thirteen, act like it!'
"But they're real." I protested.
"Grow up!" she screamed.
"NO!" I screamed, turning to run out the door behind me. Most of my backyard consisted of ocean shore. At the edge of the shore, was a dock. Whenever I was mad or sad, I came and sat on the dock. I ran to the dock and dived off the edge, fully clothed.
Right after I hit the bottom, I saw something swimming towards me. It was a mermaid. It was the most beautiful creature, she had blonde hair and a green tail.
She took out a bottle and opened it. "Here, this will help." she said as she came over and brought it to my lips.
I drank it. When it was gone, it felt like my lungs were going to burst. I started to swim to the surface.
The mermaid grabbed my hand and pulled me back down. When my lungs could no longer take the pressure, I opened my mouth and sucked in the cool water. I was surprised when my lungs felt instant relief.
"Follow me." the mermaid said as she started to swim away.
When I started to follow, I realized that I was just as fast as she was.
After following her for a while, we came upon a kingdom, this is where I would stay.
The next day, I swam to the dock and I noticed my mother was sitting there crying. I started for the surface, but was grabbed once again by a mermaid. It was a different mermaid that time. She had hair that was brown like mine and a red tail. I turned to her. "Let me go." I started tugging on my arm. "I have to see my mother, she's sad."
She just shook her head, pulling me away from the surface.
"Why not?" I snapped at her.
"If you go up to the surface," she finally spoke. "you will regret it."
"Oh." Is all I said as I allowed her to pull me back under.
I sneaked out later that night. At the dock, I saw my mom standing on the dock, talking to people. I also saw blue and red lights behind her. But, my attention was drawn to two men who were standing at the edge of the dock, pulling on a rope that was lowered into the ocean. I saw the rope in the water and swam to it. When I got there, I saw what they were puling out of the water.
It was me, dead, with a broken neck. At that moment, I surfaced, no matter what the mermaids said, and called to my mom. She did not hear me, so I swam to the dock. When I put my hands on the dock, they slipped through the solid wood. I was dumbfounded.
I was then yanked under the water once more. "I told you not to go up there, or you would regret it." the mermaid said as she dragged me to the bottom of the ocean, where my spirit would be forever trapped and guarded by the mermaids.
